If students are unable to attend courses during a semester for a valid reason, they may apply for leave by submitting a request for leave of absence and supporting documentation. Enrollment remains active during a semester of leave. The semester fees must still be paid.
Request for leave of absence
Leave may be requested for one semester at a time. The application must be submitted online via the portal studienservice.ku.de during the re-registration period; the required supporting documents must be uploaded at the same time. Requesting retroactive leave is not possible.
Deadline for submitting an application for leave
Applications for a leave for the summer semester must be submitted by April 30 at the latest, and for the winter semester by October 31 at the latest.
A leave for the first semester of a new or initial enrollment is only possible in exceptional cases (e.g. sudden illness).
An approved leave may (only upon written application) be converted into a re-registration by the deadline specified above.
The semester fees must be paid even for the duration of the leave.
During a leave of absence, no academic work or exams may be completed at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, with the exception of retakes. Students on leave due to maternity leave, parental leave, or caregiving for close relatives are exempt from this rule.
Exam or retake deadlines are not interrupted or extended by a leave!
As a general rule, a leave may be granted for a total of only two semesters over the entire program structure. However, periods of maternity or parental leave (up to three years from the birth of the child or periods spent caring for close relatives) are not counted toward this maximum leave period.
In the case of a leave for study abroad, the semesters of leave are generally not counted towards the academic/examination semesters, unless the coursework and examinations completed at the foreign institution are accredited towards your degree program here.
Important information regarding the application for a semester of leave—particularly regarding the justification for the leave—can be found in theIEnrollment Statutes.
