Most students worry about how to finance their living expenses during their studies. For students with impairments, this can be even more of a challenge. They often have additional costs and working next to studying is either not possible or only for a limited amount of time.

FAQ

Are there any exceptions for disabled students in the Bafög regulations?

When you are eligible to get Bafög, you are entitled to various aids such as an increase in the allowances (Freibeträge) when the Bafögamt determines your neediness. Disabled students can also get Bafög grants to a higher maximum age and may be allowed to take longer for their course of study. However, the actual monthly Bafög subsidy amount will not necessarily increase. Rather, disability-related additional costs are often covered by integration assistance.

Are there scholarships specifically for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses?

With many general scholarships (e.g. Deutschlandstipendium) you get special benefits if you have a disability or chronic illness, but there are also grants specifically for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses (e.g. Aktion Luftsprung, Stiftung Darmerkrankungen).

How long can I get Kindergeld?

In some cases, students might obtain the family allowance Kindergeld even beyond their 25th birthday, if they can’t make a living due to their disability.

Where can I apply for the assistive devices that I need for my studies?

Mobility aids, technical aids, and other assistance necessary for equal participation in studies can usually be applied for through the integration assistance (Eingliederungshilfe) at the inclusion office (Inklusionsamt). Study assistance also falls within the remit of integration assistance.

What are the prerequisites for applying for integration aid?

In order to be approved, you must provide proof of disability in the form of an officially recognized degree of disability (e.g., a severely disabled person's pass) or a medical review. The responsibility of the cost-bearing institution and your financial situation will also be reviewed. It is also important that the expected completion of your studies is likely to occur. The exact asset and income limits vary depending on the benefit applied for and the individual circumstances. It is advisable to seek advice before submitting an application.

How do I get to Uni?

Depending on where they live and their individual circumstances, students in Eichstätt can get around in a sufficient manner on foot, by bike, and using public transportation. Unfortunately, Eichstätt train station does not have step-free access, and the station staff are unable to provide assistance through the Mobility Center. If you are unable to travel to the university in this way due to a disability, you can apply for a transport service or assistance with the purchase of a suitable car through the integration assistance (Inklusionsamt). Under certain circumstances, the costs of obtaining a driver's license may also be covered or subsidized.

Am I also eligible for integration aid if I start a second degree program?

As a rule, entitlement to integration assistance for the purpose of studying only applies to a first degree. However, if a Master's degree program is being studied that is thematically relevant to a Bachelor's degree program, integration assistance may also be available. Entitlement may also exist in certain other cases, so it is advisable to seek individual advice.

Can I get integration aid if I study abroad?

If you want to study abroad and the semester abroad is part of your degree program, you will keep getting integration aid. If you want to stay abroad for your own reasons, there is a wide scope in which the Inklusionsamt can decide. Applications for integration aid can only be approved if the need for the integration aid has already arisen before the time of the stay abroad.
