Study without barriers

Studierende im Rollstuhl

The KU tries to give all its students the chance to study unhampered by barriers. We recommend students with impairments or chronic illnesses get information on services and possibilities as well as on any possible restrictions.

Courses and seminars

Lecturers are encouraged to make reasonable arrangements to ensure that students can participate in courses according to their individual limitations. For example, don't hesitate to ask your lecturers about accessible materials if you have a visual impairment. If you have a hearing impairment, lecturers will use support systems that you have brought with you after consultation. It is always possible to use your own assistive devices if your disability requires it. In addition, KU staff are encouraged to adjust break arrangements to meet your needs and to arrange appointment hours so that you can attend. Please contact your lecturers about your needs at an early stage, as they must understand the special nature of your situation in order to be able to respond appropriately. In case of conflict, you can always contact the KU Officer for Students with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses.

However, challenges may also arise off campus. Therefore, we have compiled a few general helpful tips for students in Eichstätt below:

Accommodation

In Eichstätt, there is only a very limited number of accessible housing. Rooms accessible to wheelchair users can be found at the dormitory Kardinal-Schröffer-Haus of the St.-Gundekar-Foundation. The dormitory Schottenau and many different shared apartments can be found a short walking distance from the University. However, most of these housing offers are fit for people who are able to walk only.

Public transport

The bus services in Eichstätt and Ingolstadt are highly developed and very well adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. However, the Eichstätt station is currently not accessible to wheelchair users. In some cases, it might be possible to make a detour via Dollnstein or Ingolstadt. There are no services of the Mobility Center (Mobilitätszentrale) of the Deutsche Bahn. Please note that most public transport services in Eichstätt only run from Monday to Saturday and only until the early evening hours.

Campus life and leisure

During the day, student life largely takes part on campus. Evening activities might not be accessible to wheelchair users, we therefore recommend you check the conditions beforehand.

Studying abroad

A semester abroad is a possibility open to all students, whether you have a disability or not. Study-abroad programs often cover the additional costs you might have due to your impairment. If this applies to you, please contact the International Office.
