European Languages and Cultures

Master of Arts

The degree program concentrates on the cultural and linguistic diversity of the European continent and its global entanglements. It consists of five key areas. The core area focuses on an in-depth discussion of European linguistics and European cultural history, also with regard to contemporary challenges. In the two project modules, students can deepen their understanding of these subjects and are encouraged to do their own research in these fields. In order to do so, (digital) methodological knowledge is taught in the methodological area. In the transdisciplinary area, students expand their ability to approach issues across disciplinary boundaries. Through the area of specialization, students can refine their profiles individually. The following subjects can be chosen from: Literary Studies, Linguistics, Art History, classical archaeology, history, political sciences and European ethnology / empirical cultural studies. The fifth area comprises language acquisition. While one language has to be continued, another one can be learned from scratch.

The Degree Program

Study Program and Structure

1st Semester

Building off of previous knowledge from the BA studies

The modules of the core area focus on the regional, national and supranational aspects of European cultural history on the one hand and on linguistic policy as well as on sociolinguistic developments of European languages on the other. Through the area of specialization, students can refine their profiles individually. In addition, the study of two chosen foreign languages is started, which is continued in the next semester.

2nd Semester

Research Semester

This semester is completely dedicated to research. In the  first of two project modules, students are encouraged to conceptualize, organize and conduct a workshop, conference or exhibition. Through this they are introduced to research. Together with the capability to reflect on cultural studies, this module specifically challenges the ability to transmit complex theoretical ideas. The module of the methodological area additionally equips the students with tools for innovative research.

Here the students may choose their place of study in order to develop further their individual profile. The internship, which is also anchored in the third semester, can be fulfilled both in Germany as well as abroad. Furthermore, the Master thesis can also be started in the third semester.

4th Semester

Graduation Phase

Student Organizations

Departmental Student Group

Who are we?

We, the departmental student group of the program of European Studies, are students from all semesters of the Bachelor and Master program. We are available to support the program on a voluntary basis.

What do we do?

First and foremost, we are the students’ reference persons for all kinds of questions and problems about the studies and everyday university life. As a link between the students and lecturers, we represent the wishes and concerns of the European Studies students of all semesters. Feel free to contact us to share your input, ideas and proposals for the improvement of the program.

Secondly, the departmental student group is responsible for the organization of events taking place during the semester. In order to maintain communication within the study program, we organize regular gatherings and a Christmas party, to which both lecturers and members of the European Studies Alumni Association are truly welcome. Additional events include a waffle sale, the Euro-Party and the Euro-BBQ Party.

We also attach great importance to welcoming and introducing the first semester students. To this end, we plan a freshman week every year with different initiatives and activities that are intended to support the first semester students in beginning their university studies upon their arrival in Eichstätt.

In addition to this, we are also the contact persons for all prospective students!

Testimonial from Cornelia Eichinger

BA und MA European Studies: Language, Literature, Culture

I completed my studies at the KU in Eichstätt for the Bachelor (2007-2010) and the Master of European Studies (2010-2012). The degree program was very interesting and diversified: you always had the opportunity to find your own way and develop. The opportunity to learn different foreign languages and the mandatory study abroad semester was especially great, as you were totally free in terms of goals and choice of subjects. Apart from that, I enjoyed good contact with the other students and the professors, which was made possible due the small size of the university.

The program helped me also in my professional career to be very versatile. I work in the International Office of a university and, in addition, I am a Spanish teacher at a vocational school.
