The Faculty of Theology and its members not only conduct research in individual projects, but also network with academics and researchers within and outside the KU. Research centers and institutes have been established for specific topics, in which faculty members are particularly involved. These institutions form the structural basis for dialog with non-theological sciences, for carrying out specialized or interdisciplinary projects, and for topic-oriented interdisciplinary networking.
The Research Center for the Christian East is affiliated with the Faculty of Theology. Its mission is to conduct its own academic research and teaching. It initiates, coordinates, and organizes, as far as possible, cooperation with domestic and foreign universities, institutions, experts, research projects, and courses in the field of the Christian East, with a particular focus on the Middle East. It deals in particular with all aspects of the ecclesiastical and social life of Oriental Christians from the beginnings to the present day. Its work covers the geographical area from Ethiopia to Georgia and from the eastern Mediterranean to India and East Asia. The research center supports students from the countries concerned. Another of the research center's goals is to contribute to a better understanding of the situation and concerns of Christians in the East in academia and society.
The Research Center for Medieval Spiritual Literature was founded on the initiative of Prof. i.R. Dr. Georg Steer by resolution of the Departmental Council of the Faculty of Languages and Literatures and established on January 1, 2001.
The aim is to establish the research and editorial expertise of the SFB 226 and the Eckhart Edition in Eichstätt on a long-term basis and thus anchor relevant basic research in the humanities in the profile of the Catholic University.
For this reason, the research center coordinates third-party funded projects from various faculties. Bringing these undertakings together under one roof promotes regular exchange, including in terms of methodology. As a result, many years of experience have led to the establishment of a center for spiritual literature from different eras and with quite divergent content, which brings together larger projects funded by third-party funds as well as dissertations and research funded from its own resources.
The KU Center for Religion, Church, and Society in Transformation (ZRKG) is an interdisciplinary research institute at the KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. It brings together, coordinates, and initiates research on the interrelationships between religion, church, and society from the perspective of change and transformation. The ZRKG continuously expands its expertise through exchanges with nationally and internationally renowned scholars and also promotes early-career researchers.
As an interdisciplinary research institute, the Center for Marriage and Family in Society (ZFG) brings together expertise from various disciplines, including sociology, economics, political science, psychology, education, and theology. The institute's work encompasses basic social science research, applied research, and consulting. Our tasks also include supporting and evaluating family science projects. In addition, the ZFG participates in discourses on normative issues relating to marriage, family, and partnership.
The ZFG's research projects are designed and implemented in collaboration with various partners from business, politics, and the church. Since 2002, there has been a close partnership with the Catholic Military Bishop's Office (KMBA).
