Research at the Chair of Physical Geography

Get close: Our research practice

On these pages, we present our main areas of research. You can also find information on current and completed research projects  (complete list available on KU.fordoc) and our list of publications (complete list available on KU.edoc). Some projects have their own project websites.

Our main focus is on geomorphology (in particular process geomorphology) and hydrology, although topics related to natural hazards and environmental research also play an important role. If you require further information or if you are interested in collaborating with us, please do not hesitate to give us a call or e-mail us.

Main areas of research

Topic-related

Process geomorphology | Sediment balance and connectivity | Karst morphology and hydrology | Hydrology | Environmental research (e.g., water quality)

Methodical (selection)

Surveying and mapping methods, in particular:

Terrestrial laser scanning | dGPS | Aerial photography using drones (asctec)

Measurement of sediment transport in geomorphological processes / sediment balance, in particular

Fluvial processes | Rockfall/rock avalanches | Mudslides, ground avalanches

Physical and chemical measurement methods: Water and sediments

Discharge and water level measurement methods | Water, soil, and sediment analysis

Modeling of geomorphological processes, digital relief analysis

Predictive geomorphological mapping | Simulation models (rockfall, mudslides, avalanches) | Sediment connectivity

Historical natural hazard research

Regional

Alpine region (Northern Limestone Alps, Central Alps, Dolomites) | Italy (Tuscany, Elba) | Franconian Alb | Tien Shan (Kazakhstan) | Iceland | Canary Islands (La Palma)
