Floodplain Institute Neuburg-Ingolstadt

Research Focus and Tasks

The Floodplain Institute (Aueninstitut) Neuburg-Ingolstadt is a research centre of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (affiliated to the Professorship for Applied Physical Geography), located in the Floodplain Centre Neuburg, Schloss (castle) Grünau. It is funded by the district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen, which founded it in 2006, and since 2023 also by the cities of Ingolstadt and Neuburg.

Research focuses on floodplain and river ecology and the associated tasks of restoration. In order to improve the ecosystem, which has been damaged for centuries, we are always looking for solutions for sustainable floodplain management. In this context, conflicts with land use such as water management or forestry must be taken into account. Research for sustainability is the long-term goal, where both socio-economic and ecologic aspects are considered equally and in the same place, to be implemented in Nature-based solutions.
