Character of the degree program

The Master's degree program in Social Work is both research- and practice-oriented and combines theoretical foundations, empirical methods and practice-oriented approaches in order to tackle the challenges of social work in a scientifically substantiated and future-oriented manner. A Master's in Social Work at the KU means thinking and learning about social innovation in a holistic way that is suitable for implementation and based on evidence-based practice. It covers central topics such as the embedding of social work strategies and implementation concepts in the various fields of action of the social economy. A social worker with a Master's degree needs to be able to classify, understand and, above all, shape legal and political developments and frameworks, corresponding pedagogical and psychological approaches as well as social and innovation-economic concepts. This must also be possible, especially with a view to further developments in the digital transformation.

The course is based on an interdisciplinary context of core and related disciplines. It is based on principles of research ethics and is embedded in a methodological context of empirical social sciences. In specifically designed teaching and learning formats, students learn about starting points and solution strategies in order to become experts in implementation knowledge and concepts in social work and the social economy. Different examination formats such as oral examinations, portfolios, presentations and coursework provide instructions for generating knowledge and strengthening one's own action and problem-solving skills. With a focus on cooperative knowledge generation, change management and empirically based theories, the degree program prepares students to actively shape transformative processes in the social economy.

Master's students have the opportunity to participate in the Faculty's research activities. They are thus learners and researchers at the same time and acquire practical and methodological know-how.
