Purpose of the Committee
The CIO Committee was established on February 7, 2017, and confirmed as a formal KU Committee by the Presidium on September 3, 2024. The CIO Committee supports the University Management in the strategic management of IT development and digitalization. It serves as an advisor and coordinating body that initiates and monitors IT projects, promotes digitalization in teaching practice, research, and administration, and ensures IT security standards.
Tasks
- Strategic advice to the University Management on IT decisions.
- Steering and monitoring the IT strategy.
- Initiating and supporting IT and digitization projects.
- Ensuring the efficiency and standardization of IT solutions.
- Developing and implementing IT guidelines and standards.
Members
The CIO Committee has the following members:
- Dipl.-Ing. Eckhard Ulmer - Chancellor (CIO; chairperson): Strategic management and coordination.
- Dr. Nils Blümer - Head of the University Computer Center (deputy CIO): Technical infrastructure and IT security.
- Dr. Maria Löffler - Head of the University Library: IT-supported library and information services.
- Eduard Breitenhuber - Head of the Finance Department: Budget planning for IT projects.
- Gabriele Kronschnabl - Representative of the Legal Department: Advice on legal issues.
- Anna Kurmangaliev - Executive Assistant to the Chancellor: Management of the Committee.
Projects and activities
The CIO Committee leads important digitalization projects such as the optimization of the IT infrastructure, the introduction of new software solutions, and IT security measures. An annual activity report documents the progress made. Once a year, a report on the work of the CIO Committee is published, describing the goals achieved and future priorities.
Purpose of the Advisory Board
The IT Advisory Board was confirmed by the Presidium on September 3, 2024 as a formal committee of the KU. It acts as an interface between the University's organizational units and the CIO Committee. It collects IT requirements from the subject areas, provides feedback, and communicates IT innovations to the organization.
Tasks
- Collecting and forwarding IT requirements from organizational units.
- Communicating innovations in the IT area.
- Supporting the implementation of IT measures.
- Advice to the CIO Committee through feedback and recommendations.

Way of working
The IT Advisory Board meets at least once per semester and is in close exchange with the CIO Committee. It communicates IT requirements and feedback, while the CIO Committee has the decision-making authority. IT requirements and feedback are communicated to the CIO Committee, which has the decision-making authority.
