The AI certificate from KU Eichstätt

KI Zertifikat

Please note that the workshops for the AI certificate are currently only available in German. However, you can always take advantage of the English-language courses offered by PLP.

The usability and application of generative AI systems open up new opportunities for university lecturers, but at the same time present them with challenges. In order to support KU lecturers in constructively addressing these developments, the Staff Unit for Personnel Development and Continuing Education will be offering an AI certificate for lecturers from 1 January 2026. The certificate can be obtained within one calendar year and comprises 60 work units (WU). The AEs are divided into the following areas of work:

Area of study I: "Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence." In this area of study, you will complete a self-study course that concludes with a performance assessment. This area accounts for 13 AE.

Area of study II: "AI in university teaching." Here, you must complete at least two full-day continuing education courses in university teaching offered by the Continuing Education Office. The higher education teaching courses that can be credited towards the AI certificate are marked with the logo from this website (AI logo with hat). Alternatively, corresponding courses can be taken at other universities through the ProfiLehrePlus network. If you would like to take external courses, please consult with Ms Inga Maria Schütte (Inga.Schuette(at)ku.de) beforehand to find out whether these courses can be credited. This area accounts for 20 AE.

Area of study III: "AI and testing." You will take part in a full-day course on testing in the age of AI, which is offered internally at KU. Alternatively, you can take a comparable course at other universities in the PLP network. If you would like to take external courses, please consult with Ms Inga Maria Schütte (Inga.Schuette(at)ku.de) in advance to find out whether these courses can be credited. This area accounts for 10 AE.

Area IV: "AI and legal aspects in university teaching." You will take part in a workshop on this topic and deal with issues such as data protection and copyright when creating AI-generated texts or images. Alternatively, you can complete a self-study course with a performance assessment. This area accounts for 9 AE.

Work area V: "Final reflection." You will write a final reflection and answer reflection questions about your work and learning process in writing. You will receive 8 AE for this.

Once you have completed all work areas, you can apply for the AI certificate from Inga Maria Schütte (Inga.Schuette@ku.de). To do so, please send the certificates of participation you have acquired and your final reflection.

If you would like to obtain the certificate, please register on the ILIAS continuing education platform for employees in the following course:

The AI Certificate for Teachers

Do I always have to start the certificate programme in January?

No. You can start the AI certificate programme and the associated courses at any time. As part of the continuing education programme in university teaching, the same or similar courses are offered annually. This means you can take the courses in any order you like.

Do I have to obtain the certificate within a year?

No. Once you have enrolled in the courses, they do not expire. You can take as long as you need to obtain the AI certificate.

Can I take the courses even if I do not wish to obtain the AI certificate?

Yes. All university teaching courses are open to all teachers.

Can I also have the AI courses credited towards the Bavarian University Certificate?

The continuing education courses offered by ki.campus cannot currently be credited towards the Bavarian University Certificate. However, the workshops led by the speakers can be credited towards the university certificate. To ensure smooth crediting, please also register for the corresponding courses via the ProfiLehrePlus website. There you can also see which areas within the university certificate the workshops can be credited towards.

I have already taken AI-related courses at other universities. Can I get credit for these towards the AI certificate?

You can receive credit for AI-related courses from other universities if you have not already applied these courses elsewhere, such as when obtaining a university certificate. If you have any questions about credit transfer, please contact Inga.Schuette(@)ku.de.
