Social transformation processes as theological challenge

The crises, disruptions and transformations in society raise questions that reach into the very heart of theology: How is integration of opposing perspectives and communication possible in an increasingly polarised and fragmented society? How are trust in God and a basic trust in reality and fellow human beings possible? How can this trust be combined with well-founded suspicion and constructive criticism of shortcomings in church, science and society? How can we maintain our collective capacity for action and hope when constraints and gloomy future scenarios burden the present? How do major transformation processes (such as digitalisation, secularisation, globalisation, dealing with the Corona pandemic or the war in Ukraine) change society? How can theology facilitate a "great transformation" towards sustainability and provide humanising, hope-giving impulses?

Research project: Current crises and challenges in the perspective of a theology of transformation

In confrontation with various current and long-term impacts of crises and upheavals, a theological concept of transformation is to be gradually developed that accepts and reflects this change, interprets it in the light of the Gospel and seeks to shape it from a messianic perspective. Following Ignacio Ellacuría and Jon Sobrino, the guiding principle is a spirituality of "historical reality": it is a matter of facing reality wholeheartedly and with intellectual responsibility ("hacerse cargo de la realidad"); assuming ethical responsibility for reality ("cargar la realidad"); working practically and politically on its transformation ("encargarse de la realidad") and at the same time allowing oneself to be carried by this reality in such action ("dejarse cargar de la realidad").
