Mapping Sicilia Antiqua

Archäologische Forschung, antike Topographie und digitale Geisteswissenschaften zur Modellierung einer historischen Mittelmeerlandschaft

Die antike Topographie Siziliens ist ideal, um die städtische und ländliche Topographie des Mittelmeerraums der Antike zu erörtern: ihre Entwicklung, Veränderung und Interaktion im Laufe der Jahrtausende wird durch die Brille der Archäologie, der historischen Geographie und der antiken Topographie analysiert. Daneben steht die digitale Verarbeitung von archäologischen Geodaten im Fokus des Kurses.
Durch die Präsentation und Anwendung von Geoinformationssystemen (GIS) für die Untersuchung der antiken Topographie der Insel werden einige der Werkzeuge, Techniken und Probleme der Georeferenzierung historischer Karten und der Kartierung historischer Datensätze erkundet. Die Übung findet als Blockseminar statt.

Current Position

Since October 2021, Assistant Professor in Ancient Topography and Landscape Archaeology (RTDb, L-ANT/09), Department of Humanities, University of Naples Federico II.

Research Experience

Since November 2020, Awarded with the National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor of Archaeology / Ancient Topography.

June 2019-October 2021, Research fellow for Ancient Topography and Landscape Archaeology of Mediterranean regions (Department of Humanities, University of Catania).

Institutional Responsibilities

Since September 2022, Erasmus Academic Coordinator for the course “Archeologia, Storia delle Arti e Scienze del Patrimonio culturale”, Department of Humanities, University of Naples.

Since May 2022, Member of the Scientific Board of the PhD School in Archaeology and Art History, Department of Humanities, University of Naples.

Since November 2021, Member of the Scientific Board of Post-Graduate School in Archaeological Heritage, Department of Humanities, University of Naples.

“Profilo topografico della Piana di Catania. Sistemi insediativi, viabilità e paesaggi rurali dalla Preistoria all’Età romana / Landscape archaeology in Eastern Sicily. Ancient topography, settlement patterns and routes networks in the Plain of Catania”.

2015 - Catania University/Selçuk University (Konya, Turkey), Double MA Degree in Archaeology. Supervisors: Prof. N. Laneri/Prof. A. Baldiran. Thesis “Settlement patterns and political landscapes in the upper Tigris River valley region”.

Since 2022 – Scientific Director of the Olympieion Archaeological Research Project (Syracuse, Sicily) within the agreement between University of Naples and Archaeological Park of Syracuse.

Since 2022 – Scientific Director of the Archaeological Research Project in Kamarina (Ragusa, Sicily) within the agreement stipulated between University of Naples and Superintendence of Ragusa.

Since 2021 - Scientific Director of the Archaeological Research Project in Medma (Rosarno, Calabria) entrusted by the Superintendence of Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia.

Since 2021 – Responsible for the survey of the Fiora River valley within the archaeological project directed by Prof. M. Pacciarelli (Department of Humanities, University of Naples).

Since 2022 – Responsible for the digital archaeological mapping within the excavations of the Etruscan necropolis of Sasso Pinzuto (Tuscania, VT), directed by Prof. A. Naso (Department of Humanities, University of Naples).

Since 2020 – Scientific Director of the Archaeological Survey Project of the Western Hyblean Plateau within the agreement stipulated between University of Naples and Superintendence of Ragusa.

2020-2022 – Scientific Director of the archaeological excavations of the Roman Villa of Castellito (Ramacca), of the Roman Cemetery of Pianotta (Calatabiano) and of the Greek Site of Reitana (Aci Catena), within the agreement stipulated between University of Catania and Superintendence of Catania.
