Eastern Christian Art and Iconography: Digital self-study course during winter semester 2025/26

The Eastern Christian Studies ONLINE CAMPUS invites you to participate in the digital self-study course Eastern Christian Art and Iconography during the Winter Semester 2025/26. Conducted by Prof. Dr. Taras Tymo from the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, the course offers an in-depth exploration of the rich heritage of Eastern Christian art and the theological meanings behind its iconographic traditions.

The course explores the profound world of Eastern Christian art, focusing on its icons and broader sacred expressions, including architecture, sculpture, carving, and tapestry. Throughout the course, we will:

  • reflect on the theological and anthropological foundations of Christian religious art, with a particular emphasis on iconography.
  • survey the historical development of Eastern Christian art from early Christianity through modern times.
  • analyze various iconographic types of Jesus Christ, the Mother of God, saints, and major feast days.
  • ponder the spiritual meaning and transformative power embedded within these sacred images.

The course incorporates video lectures with rich visual presentations, reading materials that inculde both ancient source texts and contemporary iconography studies, test questions, and additional learning resources to enhance your understanding.

Designed as a digital self-study program, the course combines flexibility and academic rigor, featuring regular online meetings that provide opportunities for dicussion, reflection, and deeper engagement with the material. It is conducted entirely in English, open to all interested participants, and free of charge.

The ZOOM meetings will take place on Thursdays from 16:00 to 17:30 (CET) on the following dates: Oct 23 | Nov 6 | Nov 20 | Dec 4 | Dec 18 | Jan 15 | Jan 29.
