New Master’s degree program in Inclusive Music Education/Community Music

In the coming winter semester, the KU is launching its new Master’s degree program in Inclusive Music Education/Community Music, making it the first university in Europe to offer a postgraduate program in the field of music education with a special focus on inclusion, a basic human right.

The program focuses on musical activities that are designed to meet the needs of different target groups in which the boundaries between artists and audience, and between teachers and students are blurred. It also considers the social processes that take place during these activities. ‘Promoting awareness of diversity and recognition of its value has the potential to break down barriers and encourage people to treat everyone in a constructive, democratic manner regardless of their differences. The guiding principles of community music are social equality, participation, and cultural democracy,’ explains degree program coordinator Prof. Dr. Daniel Mark Eberhard (Professor of Music Education and Music Didactics).

Students will benefit from close links to various institutions from academia and practice, both in Germany and abroad. For example, the program team is currently establishing partnerships with the Master of Arts program in Community Music at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada and the International Center for Community Music at York St. John University in the United Kingdom.

The degree program can be studied full-time or part-time and is aimed at graduates of teaching programs and programs in education, as well as candidates with a background in music therapy, cultural mediation, social work, or special needs education. In addition to theoretical topics and teaching methods, the curriculum also includes practical modules and modules on personality.

Applicants must pass an aptitude test, which is held once a year in September. Applicants can register for the aptitude test by submitting the required documents to the KU’s Student Office (Studierendenbüro der Katholischen Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Ostenstraße 26, 85072 Eichstätt) by August 1.
