Abstract:

The field of late antiquity has always had a strong interest in religion, particularly in religious change and conflict; religion, authority, and the state; and problems of philosophy and religion. In the past decade, the subject has received even greater attention in articles, journals, books, book series, and university curricula. There is now even a 720-page Companionto the subject, edited by Josef Lössl and Nicholas J. Baker-Brian (Wiley Blackwell, 2018). This lecture will survey the approaches taken in some of this recent work and point out where progress has been made and where fault lines of interpretation have been exposed.
