Abstract:
The place of Cicero’s De re publica in Augustine’s De civitate Dei is fundamental, and has long been the subject of study. This lecture will focus on Augustine’s assertion that justice requires worship of the true God, which forms the basis for his surprising conclusion that the res publica as defined by Cicero could never have formed a proper commonwealth (XIX.21-24). Augustine’s use of Cicero and Porphyry to support his argument will receive particular attention in this analysis.
