Abstract:

Telling stories is an essential human means of coping with reality in order to attribute meaning to it. While some stories deal with personal experiences or biographies, some are used to create feelings of fellowship within the members of a specific group, community or culture. In the latter sense, such stories may be called cultural narratives.

Like stories, cultural narratives structure single incidents and experiences into a coherent pattern of events. By suggesting continuity and coherence, meaning is produced. Furthermore, an assumed consistency underlying cultural narratives helps the individuals to identify with a specific group, community or culture.

The Anglo-Saxon myth in England or the American Dream in the United States are cases in point. This year's Academic Project will take a look at cultural narratives such as these. While it focuses on the historical development of such narratives, it also takes into account how such narratives mirror relations between different cultures.
