New Publication by Prof. Dr. Victoria-Sophie Osburg: "Lending Legitimacy to Corporate Digital Responsibility: Trust in Firm Versus Government Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Services”

The Chair of Business Administration and Psychology is pleased to announce a new publication in the Journal of Service Research (VHB A), co-authored by Prof. Vignesh Yoganathan (Aston University) and Prof. Narayan Janakiraman (University of Texas at Arlington).

Key Insights:

  • Even as companies talk more about their digital responsibilities (CDR), many people prefer that governments set the rules for how AI is used in services
  • This particularly applies when customers are concerned about AI.
  • In countries with strong regulatory systems and high technology use, people particularly prefer government oversight.
  • If people are concerned about AI, they hesitate to give their personal information to companies, especially when using digital services.
  • When firms signal that they are following government regulations (like the EU AI Act), it eases customers’ concerns and makes them feel less vulnerable. This works better than just talking about their own internal rules.
  • Thus, rather than just promoting their own rules, companies should openly show that they are voluntarily and explicitly following government regulations as part of their digital responsibility efforts.
