The course introduces the fundamental principles, concepts, and fields of application of Digital Humanities within Eastern Christian Studies, focusing on the use of digital methods for the analysis, preservation, and interpretation of theological, liturgical, and historical sources. Students gain practical familiarity with key tools and techniques such as text analysis, annotation, data modelling, network analysis, geo-referencing, and visualization, as well as with standards for structuring and managing research data (e.g. TEI-XML, Dublin Core, RDF) and the use of digital editions, databases, and scholarly repositories. Special attention is given to the digitization, description, and cataloguing of manuscripts, alongside the critical evaluation of digital resources, metadata standards, ontologies, and semantic linking within interdisciplinary research contexts. The course also reflects on the interfaces between theology, philology, computer science, and cultural studies, addressing questions of open access, research data management, sustainability, and the opportunities, limitations, and ethical implications of digital methods for the study of the Christian East.

The course  is taught by Prof. Dr. Elie Dannaoui, Director of the Digital Humanities Centre at the University of Balamand (Lebanon), an internationally recognized specialist in the application of digital methods to the study of Eastern Christian sources. The course combines asynchronous learning materials with synchronous online sessions, providing participants with both conceptual foundations and practical insights into current research approaches in the field of Digital Humanities.

The live ZOOM sessions take place on Wednesdays from 16:00 to 17:30 (CET) on the following dates: April 29; May 6; May 20; June 3; June 17; July 1; July 15.

The course is open to all interested participants, is conducted in English, and participation is free of charge.
