We are happy to welcome Maxine Broich as the latest addition to the American studies team at KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. Alongside her teaching at KU, Maxine Broich will be working on her dissertation project, with a focus on North American Astroculture and, more specifically, on how labor in space is imagined, organized, and made visible or invisible. With the increasing privatization and commercialization of outer space, questions of labor become particularly relevant, as many literary and visual texts imagine these developments in ways that replicate terrestrial labor structures in extraterrestrial environments. From a literary and cultural studies perspective, the project therefore aims to examine how different forms of labor, ranging from employment to forced labor, are represented in such outer space imaginaries. The dissertation will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Jens Temmen and Prof. Dr. Alexandra Ganser (University of Vienna).
