As an academic teaching and research institution, the KU relies on external suppliers for operational materials only in certain areas. These include office supplies, the provision of technical infrastructure (printers, computers, furniture, etc.), and other work-related materials (literature, clothing, as well as cleaning and maintenance supplies). In accordance with the framework conditions of the EMAS process, the KU strives to ensure the highest possible level of environmental friendliness and sustainability in the materials it uses.
Nearly all of the University’s paper needs are met with recycled paper that bears the Blue Angel label and consistently receives high ratings in the annual “Papieratlas” assessment. Fair-trade coffee, which is served at events and in day-to-day operations as well as in the campus cafeterias, is an example of the University’s commitment to using resources as sustainably as possible. The janitors’ work uniforms are certified according to GOTS criteria, and this also applies to products sold in the KU Shop. When it comes to office furniture, sustainability criteria are also taken into account whenever (financially) feasible (including through certifications such as European Level / FEMB: Level 3 or Blue Angel).
In order to systematically document past experiences with sustainability issues in procurement — in addition to existing internal guidelines and policies — and to address new challenges, a sustainable procurement strategy is currently being developed. This strategy will summarize key information in this area and provide recommendations for action to better assess supply chains for sustainability issues and thereby achieve continuous improvement in procurement.
