At KU, all lecturers (professors, research associates, lecturers, etc.) have the opportunity to participate in free continuing education courses in the field of educational and academic staff development in higher education. Participants in such courses are awarded the Bavarian University Teaching Certificate. These courses are linked to the KU-wide HR Development Concept for professional development and continuing education.
The Bavarian University Teaching Certificate is a nationally recognized way of imparting didactic skills in higher educational contexts, which are repeatedly required in the context of appointment procedures, among other things. The certificate is therefore not only useful for the actual planning and teaching of classes, but also in terms of prospects on the path to a professorship.
Even if you are not planning a career in higher education after completing your doctoral degree, the University Teaching Certificate may be a suitable continuing education course for you. The skills you acquire here, for example in the areas of communication techniques, presentation and conversation skills, are in demand in many professional fields.
How is the University Teaching Certificate structured??
The contents and form of the University Teaching Certificate are based on international standards. The certification, which is standardized throughout Bavaria, provides graduates with formal proof of their didactic skills in higher educational contexts, which serves as evidence of their pedagogical-didactic qualifications for future job applications.
The quality of the program is constantly reviewed and developed further by a committee of experts consisting of university didactics specialists from the ProfiLehrePlus network of Bavarian universities and the BayZieL (Bavarian Center for Innovative Teaching). The program focuses on all areas of competence that are directly connected to teaching and learning processes of lecturers in higher educational contexts.
The Bavarian University Teaching Certificate has a modular structure and can be acquired in stages as a basic level, advanced level and specialization level. For the basic level, participants must complete 60 work units from all five areas. For the advanced level, participants need 120 work units, of which at least 25 work units each must be completed from areas A, B and D and at least 10 work units each from areas C and E. One work unit corresponds to 45 minutes.
Here, you will find an overview of the seminars on offer: ProfiLehre, BayZieL
The requirements for applying for the certificate (minimum number of work units to be acquired, ...) can be found here.
In order to apply for the certificate, you will need to open an account on the ProfiLehre platform. Courses that you have attended at KU must then be documented on the platform as a "manual seminar". This can be done after registering on the ProfiLehre platform under the "My ProfiLehrePlus" tab.
Please note: Please always select "Hochschuldidaktik KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt" as the responsible coordinator for your entries.
Attendance at all internal KU events is free of charge for academic staff. KU will cover all costs incurred by you. External participants must pay a participation fee.
Courses that you have completed at KU or at other universities will be credited to you in the amount of the work units completed. If you have any questions, please contact .
One ECTS credit corresponds to approx. 30-45 hours of work. You would therefore receive 2 ECTS credits for the 120 work units of the advanced level of the certificate. Accordingly, the individual courses can hardly be represented in ECTS credits. Please also note that the University Teaching Certificate is not a degree program, but a professional development training measure. Therefore, you do not receive ECTS credits.
Of course you are welcome to take courses at other universities that are part of the ProfiLehrePlus network (more information available here). These courses will be fully credited towards your certificate. If your direct superior approves of your attending the course, you can have your participation fee and travel expenses reimbursed by the KU. In order to do so, please submit an approval request form for a training trip (on the KU intranet). Please state that the funding is to be provided out of the budget for continuing education managed by the HR Development department.
If you would like to attend courses offered at universities outside the ProfiLehrePlus network, please contact before booking.
You will be credited the work units if you have attended at least 80% of a course. In principle, however, any absence from a course can only be accepted with a justified excuse. Acceptable reasons for non-attendance are e.g. other work duties, childcare, caring for relatives.
