Introduction to Political System Theory and COmparative Politics
- Questions and issues in the political science sub-discipline of political systems and comparative politics
- Theoretical and methodological introduction, basic concepts of political science, types of regimes, elements of the democratic constitutional state, non-democratic systems, comparison of structures of democratic constitutional states, political processes (e.g., elections and electoral behavior, parties)
Politics and Communication
- Actors, institutions, and instruments of political communication
- Please note: by participating in the exercise, you will receive the higher number of ECTS credits for the course.
Political Rhetoric I: Fundamentals of Rhetorical Communication
- Basic knowledge of rhetorical communication
- Knowledge of the stages of production and functions of a speech
- Ability to independently design, deliver, and evaluate short speeches and practice speeches
- Ability to discursively justify assessments of one's own and others' speeches in front of a group
- Independent development and implementation of practical exercises to train rhetorical skills
Franco-German Relations in the European Context
- The module is aimed at German students in their first year of study and French students in their third year. This is a course-specific module that usually lasts two semesters.
- In the introductory academic seminar, the politics, culture, economy, and history of Germany and France are analyzed in a European context, usually from a comparative perspective. German-French relations may also be covered in the seminar.
Franco-German Relations at a Local Level
- Germany and France cooperate in numerous areas such as politics, economics, trade, education, and culture. Selected aspects of this cooperation will be used to analyze Franco-German similarities and differences at a local level. The focus will be on national characteristics. To this end, selected actors and institutions will be analyzed, where appropriate on site, with regard to their respective interests and spheres of activity. The different political cultures will also play a role.

Academic Writing in a Franco-German Context
- Analysis of the structures of different types of texts and their registers, followed by the production of corresponding texts taking into account the knowledge gained previously.
- Discussion of formal issues such as: structure, stylistics, discourse structuring. The focus is on coherence, stylistics, choice of vocabulary, and linguistic correctness on the one hand, and on text structure on the other.
- Introduction to the technique of commentary (e.g., using cartoons or other iconographic documents).
- Comparison of academic teaching and learning cultures in Germany and France; special features of the French “Institut d'Études Politiques.”
