Q Course – Preparatory Course for the Intensive German Course (Target level: A1)

Course description

The Q Course is a preparatory course preceding the eight-month Intensive German Course designed to prepare students for the DSH examination. The aim of the Q Course is to complete German language level A1. The course prepares participants specifically for the linguistic requirements of the subsequent Intensive German Course and serves as a qualification for admission to that course.

The Q Course is intended for applicants who plan to pursue a full degree program at KU but who do not yet meet the required language level for admission to the Intensive German Course (DSH preparation).

Course dates 2025

The Q Course consists of two consecutive modules.

Module 1: August 25 – September 12, 2025
Module 2: September 15 – October 3, 2025
Please note that classes will also take place on October 3.

The overall course period runs from August 25 to October 7, 2025.

Course fees

For students admitted to KU:
EUR 500.00 for both modules

For external participants:
EUR 490.00 per module
EUR 980.00 for both modules

The Q Course is offered in cooperation with KEB Eichstätt.

Course format and technical requirements

The Q Course is conducted entirely online via the Zoom video conferencing platform.

Participants are required to have a stable internet connection as well as a computer or laptop equipped with a headset and a webcam. Participation via mobile phone or tablet is not possible.

Workload

Participants are expected to attend daily classes (4 hours) as well as the learning group (1 hour). In addition, approximately 45 minutes per day should be scheduled for independent study.

Intensive German Course for DSH Examination Preparation

Course Description

The Intensive German Course for DSH examination preparation extends over two semesters and generally starts in the winter semester. The course is designed to prepare students specifically for the linguistic requirements of the DSH examination and to provide the German language skills necessary for studying in a German-taught bachelor’s degree program at KU.

Admission to the course requires completion of German language level A1. This must be demonstrated through a mandatory placement test prior to the start of the course.

Target group

This course is exclusively intended for KU students who have received conditional admission to a German-taught bachelor’s degree program.

Exchange students and free mover students are not eligible to participate in this course.

Intensive German Course – for Exchange Students from Selected Partner Universities (2 semesters)

Course Description

This intensive course is offered exclusively to exchange students from selected partner universities of KU. Participation is limited and requires formal nomination by the sending partner university.

The two-semester Intensive German Course prepares students specifically for the DSH examination (German Language Examination for University Admission). The DSH examination can be taken at KU and qualifies students for admission to degree programs at KU. As a rule, the DSH certificate is also recognized by other German universities. Successfully passing the DSH at level DSH-2 allows students to enroll in any field of study.

Within this course, no separate certification of language levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is issued.

Upon successful completion of the course, exchange students receive a Transcript of Records worth more than 40 ECTS credits. Depending on the individual timetable, it may also be possible to attend additional courses, such as English-taught seminars offered by the faculties.

Course duration

The course runs over two semesters, from mid-October to early July of the following year, with a total duration of eight months.

Participation requirements

Applicants must have completed German language level A1, which is verified through a mandatory placement test.
In addition, formal nomination by the sending partner university is required.

Target Group

This course is intended for exchange students from selected partner universities who wish to achieve a high level of German proficiency within a short period of time.
It is particularly suitable for students planning to pursue further studies in Germany.

Course Fees

The course fee is EUR 500.00 per semester.
In addition, a semester fee of EUR 78.00 per semester applies.
Costs for course materials amount to approximately EUR 50.00 per semester.

The total estimated cost is approximately EUR 1,250.00 (as of May 23, 2024).

Application

Participation requires nomination by the home university.
The nomination deadline is May 15 of each year.
