In which areas would early-career researchers like to see a cultural change in the academic system? This question was the starting point for the Young Researchers Day 2024, which was organized as a barcamp for the first time. This open format allows participants to bring in topics that really matter to them, discuss them directly in individual sessions and network with each other.
A special feature of a barcamp is that the specific program for the day is created together in the so-called session planning. For this, participants proactively contributed their topics, concerns or ideas in the form of short pitches, which were then organized into sessions and assigned to individual time slots.
At the suggestion of the participants, the event was held in English and German in order to involve everyone as much as possible and make the discussions accessible to everyone.
In the individual sessions, the participants dealt with the topics of transparency and open science, challenges and opportunities of digitalization in the academic system, doctoral supervision (power, rights), internationalization in the qualification process and time management. In addition, concrete strategies were developed for the effective networking of doctoral candidates and postdocs at the KU.
The final round after the joint lunch brought the individual discussions back together with short presentations and made clear in which areas and on which aspects there are concrete wishes for cultural change. The discussions were also continued during the final networking session with coffee and cake.
Many thanks to all participants for this extremely productive and inspiring exchange!
