FAQs – Semesters abroad

What should I do if I have not yet been accepted for recognition and the deadline for submitting the Learning Agreement to the foreign university is approaching?

As the duration of the recognition procedure is influenced by various factors, it is not possible to guarantee an exact date for the notification of the decision. Experience has shown that a submitted request is often processed within 5 weeks, often even faster.

If you have already submitted a credit transfer request but have not yet been accepted and the deadline for submitting your Learning Agreement is imminent, please contact the International Office at the e-mail address  approximately three days before the deadline. If required, the Learning Agreement can initially also be concluded without the final confirmation of recognition.

What can I do if my submitted credit transfer request has been rejected?

If a module is not approved for recognition and credit transfer before the start of the semester abroad, you have two options: You can either enter the module in the Learning Agreement as a "module without crediting" if you would still like to take it, or you can have another module approved and add it to the Learning Agreement.

Please note: Once your Learning Agreement has been uploaded to Mobility Online and sent to the host university, you cannot make any further changes to it unless the host university rejects the Learning Agreement.

Changes to the Learning Agreement can only be made once you have arrived at your host university and realize that a course is not taking place or overlaps with another course, for example. In this case, please follow the steps described in the Mobility Online workflow or on the website .

How many ECTS credits do I have to take abroad?

In the Erasmus+ program, Bachelor's students must successfully complete at least 20 ECTS and Master's students at least 15 ECTS at the host university. If you do not comply with these benchmarks, you may have to pay back your grant in full.
This regulation also applies to students in the worldwide and faculty-specific program who receive a scholarship from the KU, such as Promos, Promotion of Internationalization - Outgoing or the ISEP scholarship.

How many ECTS credits do I have to have recognized from abroad?

  • Students in the double degree program and students with a required semester abroad must adhere to the requirements of the respective examination regulations.
  • Students who complete a voluntary study abroad period can decide for themselves whether and how many ECTS credits they want to have credited at the KU.
  • Please note: The requirement for the number of ECTS credits you must complete in order to receive funding also applies in these cases.
