Teaching at the KU: Education tailored to the needs of the individual

“Academic studies at the KU go far beyond simply acquiring knowledge, for it is only in the process of personal development that students can truly unfold their potential and skills to the fullest. The KU provides an ideal framework for this by offering an excellent staff-to-student ratio. At our University, every student with his or her individual characteristics and talents is seen and supported. This results in the ability to react to changing requirements in one's (professional) biography, to participate in the generation of knowledge in a discerning manner and to reflect critically on this process. Individuals educated in this way can shape their lives in a self-reliant and meaningful way, find their place in society through professionalism and help shape social, political and cultural life competently, creatively and responsibly on the basis of the values of a liberal democratic order.“ - Excerpt from the Mission Statement for Studies and Teaching

The Good Teaching Award in the category "KU Profile" was awarded to Dr. Jonas Schützeneder and Michael Graßl, both research associates at the Chair of Journalism I, in 2020 for their teaching project on “Current Media Development: Podcast & Storytelling". What was particularly remarkable about this seminar was the interlinking of theory and practice, but also the collaboration with citizens from the region. Throughout the entire 2020 summer semester, the students worked on their own podcast episodes in teams of two. Schützeneder and Graßl had set the history of the city and region of Eichstätt as the overall topic. The specific search for topics, research and design of the podcasts – as well as press relations work for their own project – were then left in the hands of the students. Of course, the projects were carried out under the guidance of the lecturers, who used apps and a chat bot, among other things, for the collaboration. In addition, they also invited famous podcasters as visiting lecturers who gave valuable input. The results of the projects can be heard at www.eichstaett-podcast.de.
