In the Digital Bachelor's degree program in Catholic Theology, students have the opportunity to actively participate in current discourses in society and the church at an academic level. The program not only imparts the foundations of Catholic theology, but also focuses on Christianity in responsibility and Christianity and the church in context.
This course is particularly aimed at prospective students who do not have the opportunity to study on campus at a university. The course concept is therefore not based on traditional courses, but on digital teaching and learning formats. These enable students to pursue their individual paths of learning through supervised independent work.
Students can complete the course either in full-time (6 semesters) or part-time (12 semesters) .
Networked, modern, reflective and relevant for everyday life: This is how the Digital Bachelor's degree program in Catholic Theology that is offered in collaboration with the University of Passau can be characterized. Students gain a comprehensive understanding and in-depth knowledge of various theological disciplines. The aim is for graduates to actively participate in current discourses in society and the church at an academic level and to be able to present their positions in a professional environment.
The Digital Bachelor's degree program offers a general introduction to academic work and theological thought in the first study phase, the "Theological Foundation" (semesters 1 and 2; or 1 to 4 respectively for part-time studies). During this study phase, students acquire knowledge of the scientific foundations of theology and their interrelationships as well as important approaches, methods and principles of the individual theological subjects. Since all disciplines of theology are already represented in this phase, students gain an overview of the wide range of the subject and the interconnection of the individual disciplines already at an early stage. At the end of the first study phase, students can obtain a certificate – an option that is particularly interesting for students who do not wish to complete the entire program.
The second phase of the program (semesters 3 to 6; or 5 to 12 respectively for part-time studies) focuses on "Theology and Society" with the sub-areas "Christianity in Responsibility" and "Christianity and the Church in Context". Here, the focus is not so much on academic content of the individual disciplines but rather on practical discussion and in-depth studies. The modules are interdisciplinary and structured in a way to focus on problem-solving skills and address contemporary issues. Students learn to independently develop theological positions, reflect on them scientifically and contribute to debates in church and society.
An important component of the second study phase is the "Individual Theological Profiling". Students set their own priorities in their studies by choosing modules from biblical and ancient Christian languages (e.g. Latin or Biblical Greek) or from various theological subjects in the required elective area. In the Studium.Pro area, they choose a module outside the field of theology to broaden their horizons and also include perspectives from other disciplines in their studies. The internship module promotes the exchange between academia and professional practice and allows working students to directly contribute their work. The program is concluded with the Bachelor's thesis, in which students work on their own topic. After having passed all modules and the Bachelor's thesis, students are awarded the title Bachelor of Arts (BA).
The modules in this first study phase provide a general introduction to the thinking and working methods of theology and its individual subject areas. Here, students are introduced to the broad spectrum of theology. Required modules of this study phase worth 60 ECTS credits in total are:
(Semesters 1 and 2; or semesters 1 to 4 respectively for part-time studies: 60 ECTS credits)
In the second study phase, students explore central topics of theology in greater depth and examine them in terms of their social relevance. Here, they practice networking and discussing theological perspectives and contributing them to social debates. The following required modules are allocated to this area:
"Being a Christian in responsibility"
"Christianity and the Church in Context"
(Semesters 3 to 6; or semesters 5 to 12 respectively for part-time studies: 80 ECTS credits)
In the second study phase, the area of "Individual Theological Profiling" gives students the opportunity to set their own priorities and thus develop their individual study profile. In the required elective area, theological courses on various topics as well as language courses are offered every semester. Students must take four required elective modules worth 5 ECTS credits each, whereby a module can be taken up to three times (Mehrfachwahl in German). The following modules are available:
An internship (M16, 5 ECTS credits) and the Bachelor's thesis (M17, 10 ECTS credits) are also part of the field "Individual Theological Profiling". In the interdisciplinary courses offered in the Studium.Pro section (elective area M15), students also choose a module from another discipline worth 5 ECTS credits.
(From semester 3 of the program; or from semester 5 respectively for part-time studies; 40 ECTS credits)
In order to enroll in the digital Bachelor's degree program, you require a general higher education entrance qualification or a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification (13th year of FOS/BOS). Enrollment is also possible for qualified professionals with the appropriate higher education entrance qualification. In addition, enrollment is possible for persons with a subject-specific entrance qualification (Fachhochschulreife) and who have already begun a university of applied sciences (FH) degree course in a related field (e.g. religious education, applied theology, etc.) and in which they have already earned at least 60 ECTS credits. If you have any questions, please contact the Student Advisory Service.
Furthermore, a basic knowledge of German is also required for admission to the course. Knowledge of ancient languages (Latin, Greek or Hebrew) is not essential.
The course is also specifically aimed at those who are already in employment. This is why this course can be completed either as a full-time program (over 6 semesters) or as a part-time course (over 12 semesters). The degree program is primarily made up of digital courses (synchronous/asynchronous) according to the blended learning concept. There are only a few on-campus days in Passau or Eichstätt per academic year that complete the course. The on-campus days for the relevant modules are planned in good time and announced on the website of the program.
Yes, the modules also offer synchronous digital formats and forums that enable direct exchange. The on-campus days in particular offer the opportunity to get to know each other personally and have face-to-face conversations. Students who wish to complete traditional courses and module examinations at a study location, either selectively or perhaps for an entire semester, can conclude a corresponding Learning Agreement with the head of degree program and have the completed modules credited to the digital Bachelor's degree program.
In the modules, corresponding literature is made available by the lecturers as legally permissible. In addition, the university libraries in Passau and Eichstätt are increasingly providing digital resources (e-books, online databases, etc.) that can be accessed by enrolled students.
The degree program includes an internship (M16, 5 ECTS credits). Crediting based on previous internships and/or professional activity is possible here. In principle, previous theological knowledge from other degree programs or from well-founded further qualification courses can also be credited to modules of the digital Bachelor's degree program.
The certificate program "Basic Qualification in Catholic Theology - Digital" includes the six required modules of the first study phase (M0-M5) of the digital BA degree program and is thus worth 60 ECTS credits. Interested students who do not wish to complete the entire digital Bachelor's degree program immediately have the option of enrolling for the certificate program first. After completing the above-mentioned modules, graduates are awarded the corresponding certificate. However, the certificate can also be issued to students of the digital Bachelor's degree program if they have already completed the above-mentioned modules and cannot or do not wish to continue studying the degree program for obtaining the official Bachelor's degree.
The course is designed in such a way that students can go on to study for a Magister in Theology. The Bachelor's modules fulfill all ecclesiastical requirements, so that crediting is possible and entry into the second stage of the Magister degree course, e.g. at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, is possible.
Both Branch Library 1 of the University Library in Eichstätt and the University Library in Passau have an extremely rich collection of books and are open to all students. In addition, more online resources and e-books were purchased in preparation for the degree program, so that the libraries are equipped to meet the needs of students on the digital Bachelor's degree course. Since the academic literature in theology is continuously kept up to date with the latest research, students have the opportunity to access standard works and current specialist texts quickly and easily. The libraries in Passau and Eichstätt have a number of workstations available for students who wish to study in on-campus, allowing them to concentrate on reading, learning and writing on their own. The Library also offers copying facilities and free scanning and recording facilities.
The Faculty of Theology in Eichstätt regularly offers field trips, which are co-financed in particular from study grant funds. The academic preparation and post-processing take place in corresponding courses of required elective modules. The scope of the field trips varies greatly; longer trips, such as to Rome, Lebanon, Israel or Egypt, take place exclusively during the lecture-free period. In shorter daily trips, students visit educational institutions, art exhibitions or community centers of other religious communities. Such study trips and field trips are also open to students on the digital Bachelor's degree program.
The modules in the area of "Theology and Society" in particular have a topical or problem-oriented approach and are therefore also dedicated to practical questions from an academic perspective. The degree program also includes an internship (M16, 5 ECTS credits). For this module, crediting based on previous internships and/or professional activity is possible.
The degree program is in particular aimed at all those who are already professionally active in pastoral church ministry or related fields without prior theological training, e.g. in the area of church administration or Caritas, in associations or educational institutions with a church background. The in-depth academic approach to theology and church practice gives students a better understanding of their professional field and the existing job profiles. The course’s target group can gain additional university qualifications through the degree program and thus advance their own careers further. Of course, the program is also open to all those who are interested in theology but are unable to study on campus for other reasons: with the Bachelor's degree, students prepare for a job with a church employer, for example, or can pursue further studies in the field of theology or other areas (e.g. Magister degree program in Catholic Theology in Eichstätt or Master's degree in Charity Studies in Passau).
