Religion and Violence - Violence in Christianity and Islam as a Challenge for Religious Education
Religion and violence – a much-debated, presuppositional and explosive mine field which has known a long, burdened past and is ever explosive in its present form. Religion is misused to justify violence – only thinking of Islam here would mean falling short of the issue, as Christian history as well is full of examples of excessive violence.
In the context of an event supported by the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, the school department of the diocese of Eichstätt and the Hans-Seidel-Stiftung which took place from February 18-20, 2016 at Kloster Banz, the field of tension “Religion and violence” was approached from several different perspectives: historical, psychological, exegetical, from the perspective of contemporary culture, aesthetic media, educational theory and in a school-related context. Renowned experts from both Christian and Muslim faiths as speakers in impulse presentations have shed light on the different aspects of the topic area, which was discussed in-depth afterwards.
The event is aimed both at students of different teacher training programs (with subject Religion) and Magister students as well as teachers of religion in active employment.
