Presentation of the Guidelines “Service-learning Pedagogy for Community Development during Wartime and Recovery” in an online event on Januar 23, 2025

It was a one-day event, where representatives of the ServU consortium presented individual topics which are covered in more detail in the guidelines. In particular, the following topics were presented:

  • adapting Service-learning to war and post-war conditions
  •  e-Service-learning during wartime and recovery
  • Service-learning for peacebuilding and civic engagement
  •  reflection on Service-learning projects as tools for personal and community resilience.

It was very inspiring to learn about the experience of Ukrainian universities on their response to the challenges of war and post-war education and to have some case studies from the Ukrainian Catholic University, Sumy State University and the Dnipro University of Technology on Service-learning projects they implemented and on the tools on community needs assessment.

The central question that was raised and discussed from different aspects throughout the online event was

Why Service-learning during wartime?”

As a result it was stated that Service-learning is an unique approach that in the circumstances of tragic events serves as a psychological tool, that provides a sense of belonging to the community and furthermore reestablishes the motivation and sense of academic education.

The event turned out to be extremely interesting and successful. More than 260 people from 32 countries registered for the online event. This once again emphasizes the importance of this topic and the interest in ensuring continuous motivated learning in conditions of war or fragile peace.
