Service-learning in Higher Education for Ukraine’s Recovery”, acronym ServU, is a new Erasmus + project in which our university participates. Service-learning, as a teaching method, shows its effectiveness in motivating students, developing their practical skills, fostering civic engagement, and promoting collaboration with local communities. Taking into consideration the circumstances of war and post-war recovery, Service-learning could be a more suitable method of teaching in comparison to traditional classroom learning.
The ServU project aims to enhance synergy between Ukrainian higher education institutions (HEIs) and local territorial communities to collaboratively contribute to Ukraine’s recovery through the implementation of Service-learning education. The project proposes an innovative approach to stimulate the acquisition and development of citizenship competences among students, considering the needs of three types of local territorial communities affected by the war:
1) territories with a large number of internally displaced people,
2) liberated territories, and
3) territories in close proximity to the front lines, whose infrastructure has been significantly damaged.
Five specific objectives have been defined:
The ServU project envisions a partnership of 3 Ukrainian Universities: Ukrainian Catholic University (Lviv, Ukraine), Sumy State University (Sumy, Ukraine), Dnipro University of Technology (Dnipro, Ukraine), as well as three international partners: the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (Eichstätt, Germany), KU Leuven (Leuven, Belgium), and Libera Università degli Studi Maria Ss. Assunta di Roma (LUMSA) (Rome, Italy).
The project also unites a wide range of associated partners. Among them are: EBS Business School (Germany), the European Association of Service-learning in Higher Education (EASLHE), the European Observatory, Centro Latinoamericano de Aprendizaje y Servicio Solidario (CLAYSS, Buenos-Aires, Argentina) with the Uniservitate project, the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU), the National Academy of Educational sciences of Ukraine, several territorial communities and state administrations in different regions of Ukraine and the Union of Ukrainian Entrepreneurs (SUP).
The KU participates in every stage of the project, with our primary responsibility being the coordination of Work Package 2 (WP2): "Adaptation of Service-Learning (SL) Methodology to Wartime and Recovery." WP2 will continue until the end of January 2025.
By that time, in collaboration with representatives from all universities in the consortium, we will prepare such deliverables:
The Guidelines will be available as an Ebook in both Ukrainian and English. They will incorporate case studies with best practices of utilizing SL methodology during wartime and recovery. Target audience for the Guidelines are university administrative staff, faculty and students, though they could also be beneficial for schoolteachers.
The pilot program will take place onsite in Eichstätt from May 21 to May 24, 2024. We will be hosting 30 teachers from Ukrainian universities, as well as experts from consortium member institutions.
The MOOC will be held in Ukrainian and English. It will feature case studies with SL leaders from conflict zones and peace areas, sharing their experiences of recovery, along with assignments, tools for assessing the transfer and retention of knowledge, networking tools, and learning analytics tools.
