Scanning, printing and copying in the University Library

Our libraries are equipped with book scanners and multifunction printers (MFPs).

The book scanners are available for use at no cost; for the multifunction printers (MFPs), a rechargeable card is required.

Detailed information about the MFPs and additional locations can be found on the Administration’s “Drucken, Kopieren, Scannen” page. (DE)

Scanning

You can save digital copies to your USB drive for free using the book scanners. You don't need a card or library ID.

  • You can scan documents up to 46 x 64.5 cm in size.
  • Use the multipage mode if you want to combine several scans into one file.
  • The file size is displayed in the lower-left corner of the screen. The file size can be minimized if black-and-white mode is selected for text-only documents.
  • You can use special OCR text recognition software to make scans of texts in image format searchable. OCR can be used directly on the scanner in room UA-028 in the Main Library's reading room.

You can also use the multifunction printers to scan documents and save them to your USB flash drive or send them directly from the device to your KU e-mail-address (up to 10 MB). Scanning on the MFP costs 1 cent per scan; you’ll need a card with a rechargeable chip (e.g. KU.card or library card with a green line).

Printing

You can send print jobs to the multifunction printers from all internet workstations in our libraries as well as from your own device. Files on USB drives can be printed directly from the device (supported file formats: PDF, TIFF, JPEG, XPS).

For more information about the multifunction printers, visit the KU’s central website Informationen zu Multifunktionsdruckern.

Copying

You can make copies from books and journals yourself using the multifunction printers. Detailed information about the multifunction printers can be found on the KU’s central website Informationen zu Multifunktionsdruckern.

Copyright

Please observe copyright laws when scanning, printing, and copying. For more information, see the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space’s guide on “Copyright in Academic Work” (DE: “Urheberrecht in der Wissenschaft").
