Populismus ist kein neues Phänomen. Die gegenwärtige Intensität des Populismus und die Gleichzeitigkeit seines Auftretens in fast allen konstitutionellen Demokratien hat jedoch zu einer wissenschaftlichen Debatte unter Wissenschaftlern verschiedener Disziplinen geführt. Empirisch wurde der Populismus bisher vor allem in Europa, den Vereinigten Staaten und Lateinamerika untersucht. Diese Fälle wurden recht intensiv erforscht, während populistische Erscheinungen in Westasien und Südkorea für europäische Forscher weitgehend ein blinder Fleck bleiben. In dieser Hinsicht ist das Studium von Populismus und Post-Truth-Politik aus einer vergleichenden, interdisziplinären Perspektive in Deutschland und Südkorea aus vielen Gründen vielversprechend.
