New German-Colombian Master’s degree program on peace and conflict research

In the next winter semester, the KU will launch the new international Master’s degree program “Conflict, Memory and Peace” offered together with the Colombian Universidad del Rosario (Bogotá).

Graduates of the four-semester double degree program will obtain a Master’s degree from the KU and one from Universidad del Rosario following successful completion of the program. They acquire core analytical and practical skills in peace and conflict research. The program content is conveyed to students by theory-based peace and conflict (resolution) models, a comprehensive methods training as well as courses with a practical and research-based focus. The German part of the program is organized by the KU Center for Latin American Studies (ZILAS), the Colombian partner is the interdisciplinary research cluster JANUS of Universidad del Rosario (“JANUS – Grupo de Estudios Interdisciplinarios sobre Conflicto y Paz”).

The binational structure of the degree program allows students to spend one year of their course of study in Germany and one year in Colombia. Like this, the degree program strengthens the students’ intercultural skills and language proficiency and enhances mutual exchange of experiences, ideas and approaches. Colombia is currently undergoing the complex implementation phase of a peace treaty concluded one and a half years ago after having lived through decades of conflict.

The Universidad del Rosario is located in the Colombian capital Bogotá. In the field of peace and conflict, it can draw on a long-standing nationally and internationally recognized expertise in teaching and research. The KU intensively focuses on the areas of collective memory, memory policy and historical culture. Graduates of the degree program will have career options in various fields ranging from international organizations, non-governmental organizations and companies to political foundations and media.

The Master’s program “Conflict, Memory and Peace” is designed for 20 participants per year and starts in the winter semester respectively. The places on the program are allocated by selection procedure. The application deadline is July 15. Further information is available at www.ku.de/cmp.
