This lecture explores how Latin American photography became internationally visible in Europe during the late 1970s and 1980s. It analyses the role of transnational exchanges, institutional networks, and political and cultural tensions in shaping the recognition of Latin American photography, while also addressing the decolonial challenge of writing its history beyond Eurocentric frameworks.

In ihrem Vortrag “Between Latin America and Europe: The Institutionalization of Photography” geht Erika Zerwes der Frage nach, wie lateinamerikanische Fotografie in den späten 1970er- und 1980er-Jahren in Europa international sichtbar wurde. Im Mittelpunkt stehen transnationale Austauschprozesse, institutionelle Netzwerke sowie politische und kulturelle Spannungen. Zugleich thematisiert der Vortrag die dekoloniale Herausforderung, diese Geschichte jenseits eurozentrischer Deutungsrahmen zu schreiben.
