Most important information at a glance:

  • The “Worldwide” program is open to all KU students. Study placements are available at universities outside of Europe: in the USA, Canada, and Australia, as well as in Africa, Asia, Central and South America.
  • There is no subject restriction. All KU students are eligible to apply. Please check for yourself whether the partner university offers courses that are suitable for your degree program.
  • During your semester abroad, you will remain enrolled at KU and continue to pay the KU semester fee. At the host university, no tuition is charged. However, other fees may apply.
  • It is possible to apply for financial funding.
  • Your credits from abroad can be transferred via a learning agreement. More information is available under “Academic Recognition.”

Exchange Possibilities

Student Exchange

  • Exchange via a bilateral agreement with a partner university.
  • You do not pay tuition fees. However, other fees apply. An overview of these fees can be found on the respective university websites or in our info sheets.
  • Application: You can apply to up to 3 universities in the worldwide program.

ISEP Exchange

  • Exchange via the international network ISEP (International Student Exchange Program).
  • One-time program fee covering tuition, accommodation, and meals.
  • Over 300 universities worldwide.
  • Search: ISEP Study Abroad – Start a Search
    • When searching, specify the following filters: Level of study, region if applicable, ISEP Exchange.
    • Pay attention to Chances of Placement.
  • Application: You specify 10 preferred universities within ISEP Exchange.
  • ISEP Exchange itself counts as one university in the worldwide program.

Teaching Assistant at the University of Notre Dame

Only for students of German Studies on Master's level

As a Teaching Assistant (TA), you will support German language instruction at the Department of German and Russian Languages and Literatures and the Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures.

  • Tasks:
    • Teaching beginner-level German courses, including preparation, grading, and office hours (approx. 10–13 hrs/week).
    • Contributing to cultural and extracurricular activities (e.g., language tables, cultural events, Language & Culture Week).
    • Project work with Notre Dame Global (approx. 2 hrs/week).
    • Participation in professional development and mentoring.
  • Coursework:
    • Enrollment as a Non-Degree Master’s level student (7–8 credit hours per semester).
    • Required: one Service-Learning course per semester, two graduate-level courses each semester (including “Methods in Second Language Teaching” in fall).
  • Framework:
    • Maximum 20 hours per week.
    • Not considered employment.
    • Extensive academic and personal support provided by the Department and the Center.
  • Financial support
    • In addition to a tuition waiver (the TA will not pay tuition or registration fees), Notre Dame will offer the following financial support:
      • Coverage of US Health Insurance
      • Coverage of visa application fees up to 300,00 USD
      • Subisidy of round-trip flight from Germany to South Bend up to 2.000,00 USD
      • Shared apartment in Fisher Graduate Apartments or other campus housing
      • Meal plan for campus dining
      • Additional monthly stipend of 500,00 USD
  • Formal requirements for application:
    • Enrollment in German Studies at the KU on the Master's level (meaning completion of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent credits)
    • Transcript of records (in English, minimum grade of 2.3)
    • Letter of motivation (2 pages)
    • Two letters of recommendation
    • Proof of TOEFL iBT min. 95 points
  • Application process:
    • Applications are submitted via the worldwide program. Please mind the deadlines!
    • The KU International Office checks the formal requirements.
    • The final selection is made by the University of Notre Dame

Preparation and information

Funding

Financial support is not guaranteed in the faculty programs. Therefore, please consider the following questions early on:

  • How high are the costs of the stay in the host country?
  • What kind of funding is available?
  • How are the chances for obtaining a scholarship?
  • Are there any other possibilities?

At the KU, there are different procedures for recognition of study achievements obtained abroad depending on the respective study abroad program. Please note the respective information that is relevant for you: Academic Recognition.

Application

Formal requirements

The “worldwide” program has the following formal requirements:

  • You are enrolled at KU.
  • You have all the necessary documents and proofs. More info: Section: Documents for the application
  • You register in the portal and upload all application documents within the application deadline. Applications received after the deadline and applications that are not complete by the deadline will be excluded from the process.
  • At the time of application, your average grade is 2.3 or better.
    • Bachelor students can apply from the 3rd semester onwards. The grade shown on the Transcript of Records at the time of application counts. Bachelor students in the third semester must have achieved at least 50 ECTS in their studies by then. Otherwise an application is not possible. Bachelor students in a higher semester must be able to prove an average of 25 ECTS per semester.
    • Master students can apply from the 1st semester. The grade of your Bachelor degree always counts; also for Master students in a higher semester.
    • Note on grade conversion:  Grades from abroad are converted according to the Bavarian formula without exception. For more information, visit the Examinations Office website (information only avaliable in German).
  • You have the necessary language skills. More information: Language Requirements
  • You need an academic letter of recommendation issued by a KU lecturer. Master’s students can hand in a letter of recommendation issued by a lecturer from the university where they have completed their Bachelor’s degree for their application.
  • Optional: Proof of involvement in AK International or ESN.

Language requirements

Students must provide proof of sufficient language proficiency for the teaching language. At the point in time of application, the proof of language proficiency must be no older than two years. Providing proof through your Abitur certificate is not possible for the “worldwide” program.

Proof of language proficiency: English

As a rule, you will require a proof of your English language proficiency in order to be able to apply for a study place in the WORLDWIDE program: TOEFL iBT or Academic IELTS. No other proof of English language proficiency is accepted in the worldwide program.

1. TOEFL iBT
  • At least 105 points for Boston College, St. Edward's University, Sogang University, Sophia University and Australian Catholic University. Please note: These partner universities do not accept the TOEFL iBT® Home Edition.
  • At least 95 points for all other universities in our worldwide-programe

Remarks:

  • More information on the TOEFL iBT test is available here: TOEFL iBT
  • Please note: The TOEFL iBT® Home Edition is not accepted by all partner universities. We therefore recommend that you always take the TOEFL iBT at a test center.
  • ISEP: Irrespective of the information given on the ISEP website, you will always require the TOEFL iBT test for the selection procedure at the KU.
  • If you complete a TOEFL iBT test, you can have the result sent directly to the KU: Code C453
  • Generally, the KU Language Center also offers a TOEFL iBT preparation course in the summer semester.
2. Academic IELTS
  • Academic IELTS with at least 7.5 Total Score for Boston College, St. Edward's University, Sogang University, Sophia University and Australian Catholic University. Please note: These partner universities do not accept the Academic IELTS Online.
  • Academic IELTS with at least 7 Total Score for all other universities in our worldwide-program.
  • Please note: The Academic IELTS Online is not accepted by all partner universities. We therefore recommend that you always take the TOEFL iBT at a test center.

Proof of language proficiency: Spanish / Portuguese

Students of the Bachelor’s degree program in Latin American Studies

For students of the BA Latin American Studies, proof of language proficiency is fulfilled through the course of study. Please upload the document "Language Proficiency Report" together with an extract of your Transcript of Records showing that you have successfully taken the course "Vocabulary and Grammar I" as a PDF document in the Mobility Online portal within the application deadlines.

Students of other degree programs

Students who wish to complete a semester abroad in Latin America in Spanish or Portuguese must provide proof of language proficiency at a minimum B2 level by means of a recognized certificate when applying. Accepted certificates are:

Selection criteria

The selection and distribution of study places is carried out by the International Office. The following criteria will be taken into account:

  • The application must be formally in order. See: Formal Requirements.
  • You have the necessary language skills. See: Language Requirements.
  • At the time of application, your average grade is 2.3 or better.
    • Bachelor students can apply from the 3rd semester onwards. The grade shown on the Transcript of Records at the time of application counts.   • Participation in selection interview. The selection interview takes place on site at Campus Eichstätt.

Application deadline

The application deadline for the worldwide program in winter semester 25/26 for a study visit in winter semester 26/27 or summer semester 27:

October 27 to November 15, 2025  (exclusion deadline).

The application runs online via our application portal Mobility-Online. For more information, please click on the tab "Online application portal".

Please also note the info event on the application process. The information event will be held once in German and once in English. More information under "General Information / Information events" (at the top of this page).

Documents for application

In the following, please find an overview of the documents that need to be submitted for an application for the “Worldwide” program. All mentioned forms must be filled in electronically. Any handwritten application documents will NOT be accepted. In this case, the application is deemed incomplete.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please hand in the application documents in the language in which you would like to study:

  • USA, Canada, Australia, Asia, Africa: English
  • Latin America: Spanish, Portuguese, English – depending on the study program

You require the following documents for a complete application:

  • Passport photo
  • Proof of language proficiency as required in the call for applications - further information is available on this website in the section “Language requirements”.
  • Copy of your passport that must be valid beyond the planned stay abroad. If you do not have a valid passport, please submit a confirmation issued by your residents’ registration office stating that you have applied for a new passport. A copy of your ID card is not sufficient.
  • Transcript of Records:
    • You will require an official English-language Transcript of Records that is certified by the Examinations Office.
    • Students of the German and French Political Science program (DFS): Please submit your official “Relevés de Notes”. The document "non certifié" is not valid!
    • Master’s students: Please submit an English Transcript of Records of your Bachelor’s degree program as well as your Bachelor certificate.
  • Letter of motivation: Create this document in the language in which you will be studying abroad - In the letter of motivation you explain

    • why you are applying for this exchange program.

    • why you are interested in the university of your first choice.

    • how the exchange can contribute to your academic and professional development.

    • Please note:

      • Address the letter to the selection committee of the exchange program.

      • Upload this document in PDF format.

  • Signed liability disclaimer
  • Résumé in table form written in the language in which you would like to study (see above)
  • Course Request List (worldwide - ISEP): ​​The Course Request List is a preliminary list of courses to help you get an overview of the courses offered by the partner university.​ For this purpose,​ please use only the information currently available on the partner university's website.​ It is important that you do not contact the partner university directly regarding this matter,​ as this may lead to exclusion from the application process.​

    ⚠ Please note that there must be a separate Course Request List for each university to which you are applying.​

  • If applicable: ISEP Host Site Request List
  • Certificate of enrollment at KU
  • If applicable: Proof of volunteer work at KU with the AK International or ESN, dating back no more than two years.
  • Last, but not least: You need an academic reference. Please read more about this in the next section!

Academic Reference for the application

An academic reference is an official assessment by a faculty member that describes a student's academic performance and abilities. It serves as an important reference for the application to the worldwide program.

Students who wish to apply for the worldwide program should request an academic reference early. Ideally, the request should be made to a full-time lecturer at the KU by the end of the previous summer semester at the latest. In certain cases, e.g. Master students who have just started their studies at the KU, the reference may be written by a full-time faculty member of another university.

The review must be sent directly to the International Office by November 15 of the respective year.

How to submit a successful application

Step 1: Registration in the application portal Mobility Online
  • Start by registering via this link: Registration for application
  • Fill out the registration form with your details and your preferred universities.
  • Please note that the order of your preferred universities cannot be changed at a later date.
  • The registration form must be completed all at once.

Step 2: Upload your documents
  • Confirmation e-mail: Once you have successfully registered, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. You can then log in using the link contained in the email: Login for application
  • View workflow: After logging in, you will find your personal workflow in which you can upload your documents step by step.
  • You will find a list of the required documents in the section above on this page: Documents for the application
  • Also pay attention to the yellow help texts in your workflow in Mobility Online, which provide you with further information and tips.
Please note the application deadlines!
  • To ensure a smooth process, we recommend that you register as early as possible and upload your documents within the given deadlines.
  • Please ensure that all steps are completed carefully and within the specified deadlines.

  • When you enter the user ID, Mobility Online distinguishes between upper and lower case!
  • In case you forget your password, you must change it at the KU web service!
  • Authentication is always effected with the KU user ID (for example ggs1234 and the corresponding password).
