Recognition of credits earned in a foreign country

Before the stay abroad

Students should submit all their documents for recognition of study abroad to the International Office.

Documents to be submitted

  • Fully filled out and signed partial study contract (templates for partial study contracts can be found on the pages of the International Office)
  • Detailed, official course description from the foreign higher education institution, which includes the following information:
    • Number of ECTS credits and workload of the course in hours
    • Requirement level of the course (Bachelor's/Master's, semester/year of study)
    • Course content

ECTS points or workload

  • In the case of recognition as an elective subject or as an additional module in the specialisation, the module is recognised with the number of ECTS points that students receive for the module at the foreign higher education institution. There is no rounding to 5/10 ECTS.
  • In the case of a university outside the Bologna area, it must additionally be noted that a weighting of the acquired credit points that are not ECTS is carried out by the International Office.
  • In the case of recognition as a substitute, rounding down to 5 ECTS takes place if the foreign module has the same or a higher ECTS number. If the foreign module has less than 5 ECTS, an additional performance at the WFI may be required, the foreign module will be rounded up to 5 ECTS.

Requirement level and content of the performance abroad

  • Depending on the content, achievements abroad can be recognised as a substitute, an additional course in a specialisation or as an elective module.
  • Courses that can be recognised must have a high requirement level equivalent to the teaching programme at the WFI.
  • Recognition is carried out as applied for, i.e. if a substitute application is rejected, there is no automatic recognition as an additional module in a specialisation or elective. The student must apply again.
  • Modules that have once been recognised as a substitute can no longer be recognised as an additional module in the specialisation or as an elective subject.
  • Courses whose content corresponds to a course at the LSR by more than 60% are generally recognised as substitutes.
  • Recognition of proseminars completed abroad is generally not possible.

After the stay abroad

Students submit their documents centrally to the International Office after their stay abroad.
