The KU - Modern University with a rich tradition

The KU is a modern university with a tradition that goes back several centuries. Studying and researching in Eichstätt and Ingolstadt means working in a welcoming atmosphere: small groups instead of overcrowded lecture halls, individual consultation and close working relationships instead of anonymous treatment. The KU is the only Catholic University in Germany. It imparts specialized knowledge and social skills based on Christian values. It is characterized by excellent teaching, strong research, and social responsibility.

Mission Statement

As a Catholic University, we are open to all students. Our mission is to dedicate ourselves to the truth unconditionally. The KU fulfills this mission through scientific autonomy and freedom in research and teaching.

Development Plan

To consistently, sustainably, and transparently advance the strategic development of the KU in the years to come — that is the goal of the development plan, which covers the period up to 2030.

History

The KU was established as a university by the Bavarian bishops on April 1, 1980. However, its roots date back as far as the 16th century.

Research clusters

The KU’s research focuses on areas that permeate all aspects of university life: these research fields are also reflected in academic programs and teaching practice, as well as on the campus.

Machine learning and data science

Digital data and media are everywhere today. Digitalization is still in its infancy; it is now increasingly beginning to permeate and reshape every aspect of our lives. Harnessing its enormous potential—which has so far been only partially tapped—in a way that yields benefits, while developing it responsibly, is one of the central challenges of our time.

Environment and sustainability

Sustainability is firmly established as an interdisciplinary research topic across all faculties at the KU. The complex interrelationships and challenges arising between humans and the natural world are addressed, and insights from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences are integrated.

Ethics, religion, culture and society

Basic research in the humanities, social sciences, and cultural studies at the KU makes an essential contribution to addressing major societal challenges. This plays a crucial role in deepening our understanding of complex global issues such as social inequality, cultural conflicts, and environmental crises.

Rankings & awards

In the rankings published by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE) or magazines such as the “Wirtschaftswoche”, a German weekly business news magazine, KU subjects such as Business Administration (Ingolstadt School of Management), Geography or Political Science (Eichstätt) are regularly awarded top rankings. Convince yourself!

Playing in top league

The KU is the “Most Popular University in Germany” in the latest ranking by the online portal Studycheck. Following its top rankings in 2021, 2022, and 2024, this marks the fourth time the KU has claimed the top spot. The ranking is based on reviews posted by students and alumni on the portal. Every three years, the rankings by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE) also update the ratings for one-third of the subjects at universities in Germany—and the KU consistently performs well in these rankings.
