In the churches of the Christian East, the liturgy as an expression of orthodoxy is of central importance. It is not about abstract doctrine, but about proper worship in the cult of the church. The liturgy plays a prominent role in the spiritual life of the Eastern churches. Christian identity is rooted in the celebration of worship, the liturgy is the culmination of being a Christian. The churches of the Christian East are characterized not by dogmas, but by the celebrated faith as expressed in the rites, chants and prayers of the liturgy. They do not see themselves primarily as a teaching institution, but as a praying community. The liturgy is at the center of all church activity and is therefore the essential feature that creates identity.
