Coptic

Coptic is the most recent form of the ancient Egyptian language, which was once written in hieroglyphics, and thus belongs to the Afro-Asian language family. Coptic was used as a spoken language for centuries. Most of the texts of the Church Fathers are written in the Sahidic dialect, while the Bohairic dialect is used in the liturgy today. The Coptic language uses the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet, supplemented by seven characters of the ancient Egyptian script for the sounds unknown in Greek.
