Case Studies in Business Ethics*

For many, the term "business ethics" is a contradiction in terms: after all, the economy is considered to be the area in which moral action and adherence to normative guidelines are at best irrelevant, but generally conflict with the realisation of personal and corporate goals.

In contrast, we take the view that ethics and economics are not opposites, but complement each other. This happens neither by subordinating the economic sphere to the political, nor by redefining economics as "better ethics". The task of economic ethics is rather to integrate ethical norms into the economic paradigm in a coherent manner. Economic efficiency is thus a necessary, but not a sufficient condition for a fair economic and social order.

A special task of the professorship is to introduce the economic approach into the ethical conception of Catholic social teaching. Here the task is to analyze the implications of the social principles of "personality", "solidarity" and "subsidiarity" in the theory of justice and to apply these principles to social and corporate policy issues.
