New publication at the Chair of Macroeconomics

Prof. Dr. Simon Wiederhold - Journal of The European Economic Association

We are pleased and proud to announce that Prof. Dr. Simon Wiederhold's research paper on the professional skills of migrants will be accepted and published in the prestigious Journal of the European Economic Association.

Here is a short description of the paper:

"How do migrants differ from the population remaining in the country of origin? Simon Wiederhold is investigating this question together with Alexander Patt (IAB Nuremberg), Jens Ruhose (Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel) and Miguel Flores (ITESM). They find that emigrating Mexicans have better manual skills but lower cognitive abilities than those who stay at home. These findings can be explained by the fact that the economic returns to craft skills for Mexicans in the United States (where the majority of Mexican migrants immigrate) are greater than in Mexico; the reverse is true for cognitive skills. The selection of migrants is far better described by their vocational skills than by their formal educational level and income. The research paper has just been accepted for publication in the prestigious Journal of the European Economic Association. The paper has also been awarded the prestigious CESifo Young Affiliate Award."
