Structural Diversity in Newsrooms as an Indicator for Changes in Journalistic Working Practices? Factors, contexts and potentials in Western European newsrooms. A two-country comparison

Fachgebiet: Journalistik

Abstract:

The term diversity is currently being used heavily as a trendy term in all kinds of (work) environments. Over the past decade, diversity management has played an increasingly important role, especially for business enterprises. The topic is also current in journalism. Journalists are asking themselves to what extent a diverse editorial structure can contribute to better journalistic work.

On the theoretical side the dissertation project tries to grasp a specific definition of intersectional diversity especially for journalism and newsrooms. As for the empirical steps different sub studies shall work out to what extent journalistic newsrooms in Germany and Spain are structurally intersectional diverse. In a first step then, the aim is to examine journalistic newsrooms in both countries with regard to different diversity dimensions and their intersectionality and, where applicable, to work out differences and similarities. An international comparison will also be made and the extent to which structures of the respective media systems can promote or inhibit diversity will be worked out. Based on these results, editorial offices in both countries will be selected in a second step to work out in case studies how structural diversity affects workflows and other working methods. This will be followed by an international comparison.
