The program in detail

Contents

Latin literary studies

Classical philology is the study of Ancient Greek and Roman texts from the beginnings of Western literature to works from Late Antiquity. The KU’s teaching and research in Classical Philology covers all areas of the discipline and focuses on the Classical Roman period (from the time of the late Roman Republic to the early Roman Empire) and Latin Late Antiquity. Students are taught methods and approaches from both literary and cultural studies. In addition, connections are made to other disciplines of classical studies (Ancient History and Classical Archaeology) and to modern Literary Studies.

Latin linguistics

During their study of Latin linguistics, KU students learn about the developments of the Latin language from its first emergence to Late Antiquity, with a focus on the Classical Latin period. In addition to linguistic analysis and historical linguistics, great importance is placed on students being able to actively use the language.

Didactics

The didactics of Latin at the KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt offers a professional supplement to the study program of Classical Philology for students of Latin as a teaching subject in theory and practice. This also includes the supervision of accompanying internships at secondary schools (Gymnasien) in the region.

Structure

In the first semesters, the focus is initially on courses that teach the basics of literary studies as well as subject-specific linguistic content. In addition, the courses that prepare for the Graecum examination are integrated into the module plan. For students who already have the Graecum, courses in Greek literary history are offered as an alternative.

In the following semesters, these topics will be deepened: Literature and cultural studies will be practiced in various seminars (also on Greek literature) and supplemented by lectures.

Facilities

The KU offers a library that not only lies in a very idyllic location, but is also very well equipped for the subject Classical Philology.

Rankings and assessments

StudyCheck2024

KU students and alumni have voted for their University to be Germany's most popular university in the 2024 ranking of the online portal StudyCheck. This is the third time in a row, as KU was also voted the most popular university in 2021 and 2022. The ranking was based on over 78,000 evaluations for more than 500 higher education institutions and universities. 97 percent of students questioned for the ranking would recommend studying at the KU to others.

"There is no better praise for a university than almost 100 percent of students and alumni agreeing: I can only recommend studying at the KU! That is why we are very pleased with the ranking’s outcome, because it expresses the high level of satisfaction of our students," says KU President Prof. Dr. Gabriele Gien.
