In the KU's Interdisciplinary Master’s degree program, you can combine different subjects according to your interests. This gives you the opportunity to develop and strengthen your personal profile. Orientation in future professional fields is achieved by choosing individual areas of specialization and is supported by projects and internships. Participation in academic discourse through lecture series with external speakers and opportunities for a stay abroad are also part of the study program of the KU's Interdisciplinary Master's degree program and allow for broadening your horizons beyond the chosen subject boundaries.
The program in detail
In one of two possible profiles, the subjects – primarily in the humanities – can be combined freely according to your interests. Depending on the chosen profile, the major and/or minor subjects as well as central elements such as the Studium Individuale or the Aisthesis section are chosen according to your own wishes. The design of the degree program allows for an individual profiling, which is tailored to personal development goals and future professional fields of interest.
Studium.Pro
Studium.Pro is an integral part of the Interdisciplinary Master regardless of the chosen program profile; it is the interdisciplinary program for profile-oriented studies at the KU. In its name, ‘Pro’ stands for profile and profession, as well as proactive engagement with society. It offers students the opportunity to enrich their education by broadening their knowledge and gaining transferable skills for their future careers. The program enables students to get involved in interdisciplinary discussion on current issues, learn specialist approaches to diverse topics that affect multiple disciplines or participate in projects that deal with current social topics and challenges.
You can choose between two different program profiles and select the one that fits your interests best:
Flexible profile
In the flexible profile of the program, you combine the major and minor subjects according to your interests. Students are required to complete the major subject with a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 80 ECTS credits, Studium.Pro, an internship and the Master’s thesis with accompanying colloquium. In addition, students can take a minor subjects of at least 25 ECTS credits as well as the Studium Individuale component of up to 25 ECTS credits.
Students must complete:
- A subject in which they can write their Master’s thesis (worth at least 30 ECTS credits; major subject)
- Studium.Pro worth 5 ECTS credits
- An internship or another module from one of the chosen subjects worth 5 ECTS credits
- The Master’s thesis worth 30 ECTS credits
In order to be able to cover the total amount of 120 ECTS credits, students can complete:
- Up to two further subjects worth at least 25 ECTS credits each
- The Studium Individuale worth up to 25 ECTS credits.
You decide flexibly whether and if so, how many minor subjects you choose and how many ECTS credits you take in each subject exceeding the required minimum to fulfill the total of 120 ECTS credits.
The Studium Individuale component is a free elective area in which modules can be chosen from the entire offer of all Master’s degree programs at the KU without admission restrictions. It is particularly intended to broaden and deepen the individual course of study or to integrate a study-abroad period into the course of studies sensibly.
Aisthesis. Cultural and Media Studies profile
In the Aisthesis. Cultural and Media Studies profile, you combine a major subject with a minor subject and the profile area Aisthesis. Cultural and Media Studies.
"Aisthesis" (Greek for: "perception") is the keyword for the examination of interdisciplinary questions of historical and contemporary media cultures. What image do literature, arts and the media paint of the world and reality? In an interdisciplinary dialogue, lecturers impart the ability to participate in the cultures of Aisthesis, and to understand them fundamentally as dialogical cultures.
You must complete:
- A major subject worth 30 ECTS credits
- A minor subject worth 25 ECTS credits
- Modules in the profile area worth 25 ECTS credits
- Studium.Pro worth 5 ECTS credits
- An internship or another module from one of the chosen subjects worth 5 ECTS credits
- The Master’s thesis worth 30 ECTS credits

As your second subject, you may choose another of these subjects or one of the following:

Rankings and assessments
KU students and alumni have voted for their University to be Germany's most popular university in the 2024 ranking of the online portal StudyCheck. This is the third time in a row, as KU was also voted the most popular university in 2021 and 2022. The ranking was based on over 78,000 evaluations for more than 500 higher education institutions and universities. 97 percent of students questioned for the ranking would recommend studying at the KU to others.

Studying abroad
The KU maintains a partnership network with around 300 universities worldwide. The KU International Office supports students in the planning phase and provides information on different financing possibilities for stays abroad.
Practical connection
Internship in the Flexible Master’s degree program
The Interdisciplinary Master’s degree program provides for an internship at a private or public institution, which brings students into contact with possible professional fields at an early stage. Students also have the possibility to complete their internship abroad; for individual advice and support in finding an internship and financing possibilities, the KU Career Service and the International Internship Service are happy to help.

The KU
The KU has two campuses: Eichstätt and Ingolstadt. Seven faculties are located in Eichstätt. The Ingolstadt School of Management (WFI) and MIDS (Institute of Applied Mathematics, Machine Learning and Data Science) are located on our Ingolstadt campus.
This degree program is taught on our Eichstätt campus.

Study location
The district of Eichstätt and the city of Ingolstadt are located in the heart of Bavaria. This central location also means that the KU is easy to reach. Eichstätt impresses with its unique combination of baroque architecture, modern amenities and the picturesque nature of the Altmühltal natural park.
Campus
Short distances and lavish green spaces characterize the KU campus in Eichstätt. The KU is a campus University with modern facilities. The buildings on campus are located close to the Eichstätt old town.

The application process for international applicants is now completely digital. You can register online in our application portal and carry out and submit your application. After you have carried out the application and uploaded your documents, you do not need to send your documents to us again by post. You do have to submit certified true copies only if you are admitted at the time of enrollment.
Depending on the course of study, you may be asked for information on internships, professional experience, etc. Please upload the relevant documents in the upload area for all the information you provide, even if these are not mandatory fields!
