Overview

The contents in the subject Philosphy/Ethics are essentially derived from philosophical ethics as the central scientific reference discipline of the subject, but questions of religion and politics also play a role. Since these topics are directly related to the lifestyle of schoolchildren, the practical activity allows for an intensive and personal contact with pupils beyond the teaching practice.

The program in detail

Contents

Classical works of ethics

The classical works of philosophical ethics, as they have been handed down to us in the writings of thinkers such as Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas or Immanuel Kant, form the basis of this degree program and are an important point of reference for teaching philosophy/ethics. The purpose of studying to become a teacher of philosophy/ethics must always be not to understand these thoughts as dead educational goods, but to create a lively dialog with the current realities of pupils’ lives.

Systematic ethics

Ethics as a science does not primarily consist of a historical sequence of positions of "great thinkers". Philosophy and ethics above all constitute an attempt to deal with the problems and conflicts of human life, science, in politics and society as well as in many other areas in a scientific way and to find answers to central human questions.

Christianity and world religions/philosophy of religion

Since Philosophy/Ethics or Ethics is a substitute subject for religion in the curriculum of public schools in Bavaria, and since many people associate lifestyle issues with religious questions, Christianity and the other world religions also form part of the curriculum. By imparting knowledge on the contents of faith, ethics and cults of the various denominations, the study program aims to create the basis for promoting mutual understanding of religions and denominations in ethics classes and to make a contribution towards interreligious dialog. This requires, not least, an understanding of what religion is and how it can be relevant to people. This content is an essential part of the philosophy of religion.

Didactics of ethics

Didactics of ethics

The field didactics of ethics deals with the ethical, cultural and political conditions and possibilities of processes of ethical education. Within the framework of the teaching degree program, special emphasis is placed on concepts of methodical-didactic teaching methods in order to prepare students for their future careers both with theoretical content and practical approaches. But also questions about the connection between one's own teaching activities and their significance for the ethical development of pupils play a role in this context.

Rankings and assessments

StudyCheck2024

KU students and alumni have voted for their University to be Germany's most popular university in the 2024 ranking of the online portal StudyCheck. This is the third time in a row, as KU was also voted the most popular university in 2021 and 2022. The ranking was based on over 78,000 evaluations for more than 500 higher education institutions and universities. 97 percent of students questioned for the ranking would recommend studying at the KU to others.

"There is no better praise for a university than almost 100 percent of students and alumni agreeing: I can only recommend studying at the KU! That is why we are very pleased with the ranking’s outcome, because it expresses the high level of satisfaction of our students," says KU President Prof. Dr. Gabriele Gien.
