European Studies: Language, Literature, Culture

Master of Arts

In a more in-depth way, the Masters in European Studies works with the cultural periods of Europe and the European approach to other, non-European cultures. The research orientation is a central aspect of this degree program.

The Degree Program

Study Program and Structure

1. Semester

Building off of previous knowledge from the BA studies

In the first semester, the acquired knowledge of the students from the various BA study programs are gathered and built upon. In the module “Cultural Memory and European Identity,” the central concepts of the program are conveyed. An individual concentration of studies is also established in the first semester through the choosing of an area of specialization. The following areas of specialization can be chosen from:

  • Literature
  • Linguistics
  • Art History
  • History
  • Political Science and
  • European Ethnology

In literature, as well as linguistics, an additional concentration can be added with the choice of philology. The following are the given options:

  • English/ American Studies,
  • German Studies, as well as
  • Romance Studies

In this context, it is also possible to combine modules from different philologies.

In addition to these studies, two chosen foreign languages should also be begun in the first semester, which should continue in the second semester.

2. Semester

Research Semester

This semester is completely dedicated to research. In the module “Academic Project”, students conceptualize, organize and conduct a workshop, conference or exhibition. This module specifically challenges, together with the capability to reflect on cultural studies topics, the ability to transmit complex theoretical contents. In the last years, for example, an exhibition was organized in occasion of the 200 years of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, in cooperation with the Ingolstadt community center. In addition to this exhibition, a workshop about cultural narratives has also taken place. In the summer semester of 2020, a virtual excursion was organized under the title: “Beyond Brexit: a virtual journey through Scottish history and identity, with reference to UK and European relations”.

3. Semester

Expansion of Intercultural Experience

With the mandatory study abroad semester, the focus of this semester lies on intercultural experience. Here the students may choose their place of study in order to develop further the content of their concentration of studies. The internship, which is also anchored in the third semester, provides the students with an insight into practical professional experience as well as the additional qualifications in the professional field. This can be fulfilled both in Germany as well as abroad. Furthermore, the Master thesis can also be started in the third semester.

4. Semester

Concluding Phase

In the fourth semester, the interdisciplinary capabilities of the students are developed through the module “Transdisciplinary Studies- in depth”. Furthermore, the knowledge from the area of specialization is also expanded. The remaining time is available for the students to complete the Master thesis.

Information about the Required Internship

The recently introduced internship represents a new element of the Master’s program of European Studies. Scopes of this internship focus on the development of self-learning skills, development of communication and presentation skills, as well as the connection between academic and professional environment. The internship, which can be completed in Germany or abroad, should be at least 4 weeks long and should provide the student with an overview of professional tasks as well as with additional professional qualifications. In the past, students of the BA in European Studies have made internships in the European Parliament, in museums, at car manufacturers, in tourist information centers, and in German embassies abroad.

A list of completed internships is available here in PDF-format.

Student Organizations

Departmental Student Group

Who are we?

We, the departmental student group of the program of European Studies, are students from all semesters of the Bachelor and Master program. We are available to support the program on a voluntary basis.

What do we do?

First and foremost, we are the students’ reference persons for all kinds of questions and problems about the studies and everyday university life. As a link between the students and lecturers, we represent the wishes and concerns of the European Studies students of all semesters. Feel free to contact us to share your input, ideas and proposals for the improvement of the program.

Secondly, the departmental student group is responsible for the organization of events taking place during the semester. In order to maintain communication within the study program, we organize regular gatherings and a Christmas party, to which both lecturers and members of the European Studies Alumni Association are truly welcome. Additional events include a waffle sale, the Euro-Party and the Euro-BBQ Party.

We also attach great importance to welcoming and introducing the first semester students. To this end, we plan a freshman week every year with different initiatives and activities that are intended to support the first semester students in beginning their university studies upon their arrival in Eichstätt.

In addition to this, we are also the contact persons for all prospective students!

How can you reach us?

You can reach us per email at fachgruppe-europastudien(at)ku.de

Alumni of European Studies in Eichstätt

In order to stay in contact after graduation and to build networks, the association of “Alumni of European Studies in Eichstätt” was founded on August 1, 2007.

What are the goals of the Alumni Association?

The Alumni of European Studies in Eichstätt are organized as a non-profit organization, which is committed to the wellbeing of all members and for mutual assistance. The association supports the projects of European Studies, organizes guest lectures and is involved in advanced training events. Proposals for concrete funding opportunities are most welcome.
Through the Alumni Association, a network is established between former and current students of European Studies. This network aims at maintaining contact beyond the program and in the university. With this perspective, and through the commitment of the members of the association, the notoriety of the degree program is increased and the interest in it is raised.

What does the Alumni Association offer?

  • Networking with other graduates of Eichstätt European Studies
  • Contact with the alma mater beyond studies
  • Opportunities for civic engagement.

BA und MA European Studies: Language, Literature, Culture

I completed my studies at the KU in Eichstätt for the Bachelor (2007-2010) and the Master of European Studies (2010-2012). The degree program was very interesting and diversified: you always had the opportunity to find your own way and develop. The opportunity to learn different foreign languages and the mandatory study abroad semester was especially great, as you were totally free in terms of goals and choice of subjects. Apart from that, I enjoyed good contact with the other students and the professors, which was made possible due the small size of the university.

The program helped me also in my professional career to be very versatile. I work in the International Office of a university and, in addition, I am a Spanish teacher at a vocational school.
