M5: Church History & Patristics

Church History is the academic discipline that examines the origins, development, and transformation of Christian churches and communities from their inception to the present. It analyzes ecclesiastical structures, theologies, practices, and forms of piety within their historical, social, cultural, and political contexts. As a historical-critical discipline within theology, it maintains a close connection to general history.

Patristics is the academic discipline dedicated to studying the lives, writings, and theology of the Church Fathers. It explores the emergence of central Christian doctrines, the interpretation of Holy Scripture, and the intellectual, philosophical, and cultural contexts of early Christianity, combining philological, historical, and theological methods.
