Classrooms

The objective is to develop appropriate basic and advanced Blended Learning modules in the field of Eastern Christian Studies that can flexibly be applied and used as digital self-learning units. The digital learning formats will be designed together with renowned experts from each field and offered via the ONLINE CAMPUS for teaching at the KU and at other universities in Germany and worldwide.

Mandatory Area: Languages and Literatures of the Christian East (30 ECTS)

Regulations on the choice of languages:

In the mandatory area "Languages and Literatures of the Christian East" within the MA Eastern Christian Studies, students are required to study two different languages. For each language, one language course module (10 ECTS) and one reading course module (5 ECTS) are provided. The modules "M1: Language I – Language Course" and "M2: Language I – Reading Course", as well as "M3: Language II – Language Course" and "M4: Language II – Reading Course", must therefore be completed in two different languages. A language chosen for the Language I modules is excluded from being chosen for the Language II modules. Multiple accreditation of the same language is not permitted.

The specific language is chosen by the students from the language pool designated for the degree program. The actual availability depends on the respective courses offered in the program.

Mandatory Area: Theology of the Christian East (25 ECTS)

Mandatory Area: Interdisciplinary Approaches (15 ECTS)

M14: Studium.Pro (5 ECTS)

Studium.Pro is the interdisciplinarily designed program for profile-oriented studies at the KU. "Pro" stands for profile, profession, and a science that is also socially engaged. Studium.Pro offers students the opportunity to enrich their educational and qualification path alongside or within their subject studies. This is achieved through the interdisciplinary examination of current problems, through the qualified examination of cross-disciplinary topics, or through the project-based handling of current social themes and challenges.

Each semester, the KU's course catalog includes courses that can be optionally attended by students of all disciplines. During their studies, one module from the canon of the offer must be chosen amounting to 5 ECTS points. Each semester, modules are also offered that take place partially or entirely digitally.

Mandatory Area: Methodological and Practical Approaches (15 ECTS)

M18: International Internship (5 ECTS)

The module M18: International Internship in the MA Eastern Christian Studies degree program enables students to gain practical experience in an international academic, ecclesiastical, or cultural environment. In institutions such as universities, research centers, museums, church facilities, NGOs, or cultural institutions, they apply the knowledge acquired during their studies in theology, church history, philology, and cultural studies to specific work and research contexts.

During the internship, students gain insight into the institutional, cultural, and ecclesiastical structures of international partners and learn to orient themselves independently in different working environments. They participate in projects, research, or digitization initiatives, develop communication and teamwork skills, and take on tasks and project components on their own responsibility.

An online block seminar for the presentation of the written internship report promotes reflection on the experiences made and the skills acquired. At the same time, the module supports students in sharpening their academic and professional orientation and exploring possible fields of activity in research, education, cultural work, or ecclesiastical service in an international context.

M19: Master's Thesis (20 ECTS)

In module M19: Master's Thesis, students independently address a subject-specific or interdisciplinary research question from the field of Eastern Christian Studies. In close consultation with a supervisor, they freely choose a topic and specialization and independently implement a large-scale academic project.

The students develop a realistic time and work plan and implement it in a goal-oriented manner throughout the research process. They select suitable methods and theoretical approaches from theology, church history, philology, cultural or social sciences and apply them reflectively to their research question. A particular focus lies on the systematic research, critical analysis, and evaluation of relevant sources, manuscripts, editions, and research literature.

The results of the Master's thesis are presented in a logically structured, linguistically precise, and formally correct academic text that meets the recognized standards of academic work. Additionally, students present their Master's thesis in a presentation followed by a discussion (45 minutes), in which the methodology, argumentation, and key results are presented and critically reflected upon.

The module promotes the ability to critically penetrate complex theological, historical, cultural, and philological questions of the Christian East, to develop one's own academically sound positions, and to situate the results within broader professional and interdisciplinary discourses. At the same time, students reflect on their academic approach and gain orientation for their further academic or professional development.
