Welcome to Eichstätt

Eichstätt, the multi-faceted city on the Altmühl river, is located in a valley meander surrounding the spur on which the Willibaldsburg castle was built. The town is quite small (population 14.000), but is the district capital of Upper Bavaria's northernmost district, the bishop's see of one of the smallest German dioceses, and last not least home of the only Catholic University of the German-speaking world. It features many treasures such as...

  • Famous Jurassic fossils collected in renowned museums, most notably the Jura Museum in the rooms of Willibaldsburg castle. It offers wonderful views of the region which is famous for its excellently preserved fossils from the Jurassic period that were discovered due to the intensive quarrying activities. The Solnhofen limestone is found on the floors of castles, cathedrals and houses worldwide. Among the most impressive fossils shown in the museum are the world's only specimen of the predatory dinosaur Juravenator and the Eichstätt specimen (the first one of only 12 existing) of the world-famous jurassic bird Archaeopteryx.
  • Baroque buildings lining the medieval road network of the old town (due to nearly complete destruction in the 30 years war). Famous diocesan architects of the second half of the 20th century developed stunning, award-winning combinations of original Baroque facades with modern concrete, steel and glass structures. Many of these buildings host the Catholic University of Eichstaett-Ingolstadt. Find out about its unique profile that unites excellent teaching, strong research, and social responsibility with a certified sustainability strategy.

  • Eichstätt is the gateway to the Altmühl Valley Nature Park offering hiking and cycling activities or canoeing trips on the river.

  • The Alps are less than 200 km south of Eichstätt - sometimes you can even see them from the Jura plateau. Another geological highlight is the meteor crater "Nördlinger Ries" with the famous "Rieskrater Museum", just ca. 65 km west of Eichstätt.

As you will see, nearly everything in Eichstätt is only a 10-15 minute walk away: From the train station to your hotel, from the hotel to the seminar rooms of the venue, and from the Hofgarten park to the traditional Bavarian guesthouses where we're going to have dinner together....

The Venue & How to get there

The Venue

The meeting will be held on the premises of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. Poster exhibition and oral presentations will take place in the building of the former riding school of the ancient Prince Bishops of Eichstätt.

For the ice breaker, and during coffee breaks, we will gather either in the courtyard of the riding school/"Aula" library complex or in "Theke" student café nearby. Two conference dinners have been organised and will take place at two Bavarian restaurants, namely the "Gutmann" and "Trompete" that both offer the flair of a traditional Bavarian guesthouse, regional cuisine and local beers plus German "Gemütlichkeit". Both places are, as almost everything in Eichstätt, located at walking distance of 5-15 minutes to the venue and most likely to your hotel.

Speaking of hotels: Upon registration, you will automatically receive a list of hotels where we have reserved rooms (roughly between 50 and 100 EUR per night, including breakfast) that you can book for your stay.

How to get there

The city of Eichstätt is located in the centre of Bavaria, with the major cities of Munich, Nuremberg, Augsburg and Regensburg within a c. 100 km radius. You can reach Eichstätt via...

  • National and international train connections. International connections will lead you most likely to Munich, Nuremberg or Regensburg. From these train stations, there are regional trains connecting you to Ingolstadt and/or Eichstätt. Note that "Eichstätt Bahnhof" is a regional train station, while you have to book your tickets to "Eichstätt Stadt", the local train station located directly adjacent to the river Altmühl and the city centre. From Munich and Nuremberg, regional train connections take approximately 1,5 hours (Regensburg c. 2 hours, Ingolstadt c. 45 min). Train connections can be found and booked via https://int.bahn.de/en/.
  • If you need to travel by plane, you will most likely be flying to Munich Airport (MUC Franz-Josef Strauß). From there, the best way of going to Eichstätt is taking the Airport Express bus connecting the airport to "Ingolstadt Nordbahnhof" train station, from where a regional train will take you to "Eichstätt Stadt" train station.
Another option for flying is Nuremberg Airport (NUE Albrecht Dürer). From here, you take the underground train U2 to Nuremberg Central Station and catch a regional train to Eichstätt (see train connections).
  • Rental cars are available at the airports and major train stations. It's a c. one hour drive to Eichstätt from Munich (via autoroute A9 north), Nuremberg (A9 south), Augsburg (via major roads B2 and B13/B16) and Regensburg (A93/A9 or B16/B13). Ingolstadt is just half an hour away (via B13)
  • Long-distance coaches (e.g. Flixbus) may be used to reach Nuremberg, Munich, Regensburg, Augsburg or Ingolstadt to reach the connecting trains to Eichstätt (see above).
